580 E
Hello, new to this site. Have a 1986 580 E Backhoe, the front bucket was well used, but the hoe was barely used at all, everything is works and looks like new except over time the dust wipers all got dry rotted, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to change just the wipers instead of rebuilding the whole cylinder.

Not that I'm aware of - OEM and aftermarket kits the wipers are all 1-piece, and press into the outside of the gland nut - No way I'm aware of you could get past the rod end without disassembly... Steve

You gotta pull the cylinder apart. Make sure you buy the wrenches for the gland nut and don't try and get cheap on it. Some of them are really on there tight and there is usually a keeper bolt. Tip: leave the tube on the machine to keep the cylinder from rotating when you are trying to back the gland nut out.

Everything RNR said, and MORE - Case tends to use small round head screws for locks, if you look at the pic I posted you can see the hole it came out of. One of my bucket curl cylinders was on there so hard (probably 15-20 years to "get comfy" that I had to retract the cylinder (keep the main seals from charring and making cleanup even harder) then heat the area around the gland (see threads in pic) til it was a dull cherry red, then get on that narrow lip with a 3' pipe wrench - finally got it to move a little, then shot penetrating oil in the crack til it quit catching fire, and eventually got the gland out.

I've still got 7 MORE cylinders to do on my 580B, and rather than fight 'em with the home made spanners I built I bought the REAL deal -

Equipment Parts Source, Aftermarket, Case, Backhoe, Crawler, Loader, Dozer, Tractor Search results for: 'CAS1456'

From my experiences you will ALSO need a HEAVY duty (or guaranteed :=) 3/4" breaker bar and probably a 4' length of pipe. Also, if you can figure out a way to CLAMP the spanner wrench HARD against the end of the gland, it'd be good - those small end holes for spanner tend to make things wanna slip out.

All in all, it's an experience that might make you think twice about it "being better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick"... Steve
