We are tractor shopping and want to get a smallish tractor. but make sure it has the horsepower to run the Case 8420 balers (same as Hesston 530) in case we buy the baler in the future.
Would you baler owners let us know what HP at the PTO we should go with?
We suspect the spec books are probably giving us lower end numbers.

thanks

I have a Hesston 5530, same baler, have used a 32pto hp tractor on it. You do really need more hp on hills. A 45-55pto hp tractor will just play with it. Do not use more than 60hp as you will replace the gearbox!!! Don't ask how I know that. They are a good baler, ours has over 10,000 rolls on it.

We have customers using 100 pto horsepower tractors and it is over kill. Haven't seen issues with the gear box and twenty years plus of use. They do hold there value well do to the bale size.

Thanks for the input. Here's a tractor we found for sale. John Deere 5105, 2 WD with a loader, engine 45.6 hp, PTO 40 HP.

We have only 15 acres hay, but it is quite hilly. Light soil. We use a 7' haybine.

Would this be big enough for this small baler?

i think you need to step up to a 55hp an 45 on the pto.an that should be big enough on your hilly ground.you dont want to lugg the motor down running the pto.
