There have always been feral cats around here, about seven years ago a couple of young ones were cavorting in the yard. Come wintertime, the gray one started hanging out on the back patio to get out of the weather. Made it a bed box and started feeding it. Eventually, it would come into the house to eat, but was always skittish and never let me get too close.
It turned up pregnant, of course, and had kittens in the neighbor's wood box, and with his ok, I kidnapped them when they were about two weeks old. She wasn't too happy about having to raise them in the house, and would give a Marge Simpson growl of disapproval when the kittens came over to crawl all over me, but eventually got over it. She would rely on me for babysitting them while she went off for a couple hours at a time.
I was only going to keep one kitten at the outset, Skunkface, on the right, but Cuddlecat was just so affectionate that I figured you can't give away love like that, so I kept her as well. Unfortunately I lost her about a year ago, still miss her something fierce. The other two found a wonderful home with a girl I had worked with at the fence company, they are thriving with the kids and the dogs.
Of course the mama cat went and got pregnant again, this time she had the kittens here. Same deal, I'd look after five kittens this time. About the time they were old enough to find homes, her and the entire litter disappeared. They were gone for weeks, and I figured they were gone forever, but one day the tabby came in at dinnertime, just like nothing had happened. The rest, who knows; but Squeaker (so named because he can't meow) has been here every since and is currently on my lap, as it seems to be his favorite place.
Figured I was out of the cat business; one day the neighbor kids were looking for a lost kitten, a couple days later I heard it behind the shop and coaxed it out. Calmed it down and took it back; a day later they brought it back as they had already got another, like it was a lost comb or something. So that's how I ended up with Little Cat, who is still startled by shouty kids outside.
That's a somewhat abbreviated version of my cat saga. Kittens are awesome, but are a lot of work to raise.
