Cats and rabbits

The people that share a dirt road with me have about 5 cats that they let roam the area, about a week ago I see one of their cats walking down the road with a baby rabbit in her mouth. the rabbit was kicking and trying to get loose while what I think was the mother rabbit kept running at the cat trying to make the cat drop the baby.
I was bushing-hogging a field and had a 22 r**** on the tractor with me,I grabbed the 22 and was going to scare the cat into dropping the rabbit but I got a little to close and killed the cat, but the baby rabbit ran off with the mother rabbit so no problem. only 4 cats to go.

I'm fraid if somebody shot my cat I'd be gunnin for their dog.

There's plenty of folks that think its O.K. to let their cats (or dogs, for that matter) roam and plenty of folks that think opposite.

And then there's the city/county leash laws ( for those municipalities that have them )that state that animals shouldn't roam free, off your property.

As a lifetime certified kitty nut, I would never let my cat outdoors. All they do when outside is hunt and kill, regardless of if they are hungry or not. It is not their fault, that is what cats do. The toll on wildlife from domestic cats is incredible.

Rodent control can be done effectively with traps and baits, so even barn cats and such no longer are a good reason for me. If my cat was outside, in the neighbor's yard, hunting their bird bath, I wouldn't be surprised if it wound up shot or trapped and sent to the animal control.

Albiet a different game if it was walking down a public roadway, and shot.. which probably violated 2-3 laws in doing so, if there was no self defense issue.

I have barn cats in the enclosed section of my barn where I store tack, feed and hay... cats are plenty usefull there... None of my cats gets to go 'outside'.. I call them the 'inmates'. Dogs get to go out and potty and run around inside the fenced yard 3x per day... and an occasional off-compound walk on a leash.

Hi ALl, We just picked a cat up from a shelter an hour ago.. I want to put it in my barn for mouse control... It is SPAYED and has ALL CLAWS so plz no need to cover those subjects

1.) Should I leave it in the barn or give it an access door?
2.) Does it need a heat source or just some straw in a box over the winter?

I never had a barn cat and just want it to be comfortable and happy in this regard but it must be a 'barn cat' thx

IF you leave it an access door it will come and go.. if no door.. it stays inside.

My barn is unheated and I've had 2 cats living in it for 10ys.. they like the hay..

does it get cold in central florida soundguy? it does in north indiana so i wonder what people do for their cats at my latitude

It has been near 0 in real extreme years. but rarely under teens.. and mostly high 20's during hard part of winter.
