CB Radio

Had CB in truck in late 70's. And now 35 years later the radio is in garage and wife sitting on couch.

Not us. We run FRS radios for short range and FM business band for long range in the equipment. Don't want to hear 'potty mouth' CB crap anyway. Total waste of money (CB radio).
I drive from about Washington DC to Tupelo, Mississippi and back about 4 times a year. About half the trips there is a major "shut the interstate down" accident somewhere along the way. Every time we jump on the CB and can usually get great instructions by listening to truckers on how to get around. Well worth the money.
Don't know as if I need it on a tractor.

one reason I asked is, I cannot hear my cell phone ring...I do carry it when I'm operating in the field. I was wondering if a CB might be a better option.

Not being able to hear the phone ring is one of the reasons we put CB's back in everything with a cab. That and phones still don't work in some areas of the farm. We tried the Motorola talkabouts, but they're only good for maybe a mile where we are. The CB's are good for 2 to 3 miles with squelch turned all the way off and 5 to 10 if you want to listen to static.

I use a Samsung android phone and a pin cable from headphone jack to a Worktunes headset. I listen to music I've recorded and shuffle it. If the phone rings, it automatically cuts off the music and I hear it ringing, remove the headphones and answer, or not, the call.
I get good sound through the headphones, keep the phone in my shirt pocket, and can hear the tractor enough to know if there is a problem, in addition to reading the gauges from time to time. The headphones keep a lot of ambient noise from destroying what is left of my hearing. I've tried it with earbuds; the tractor is too loud for my ears, and I can't hear the music either.

We have working CB's in Most of the main machines , 6 tractors, swather, backhoe and 3 graintrucks . I love them for being in contact with new or less experienced drivers without messing around with phones all the time .

I need to get some radios setup for around the property. Will probably use Baofeng BF-888s radios set to use MURS frequencies (less competition and usage/power restrictions than the FRS or GRMS bands).
We use them at work (programmed to our frequencies) as "disposable" radios for contractors (we would rather replace a $15 Baofeng than a $400 Motorola Radius CP200 when it falls off of the roof, ladder, manlift, catwalk, etc, etc, etc).

Aaron, I see there are not any technical specifications listed on Amazon for these radios. Can you comment how well they work compared to the motorola? I can read and understand technical specifications, but I know a lot of people that would buy these units could not make heads or tails out of technical specs for radios so I understand why they may not publish them as well as they are probably substandard. I mean what do you expect for under $15 each? But as you said, for something that may get dropped in the mud or mashed anyway, I can see how you would want to put these into service if they work satisfactorily.
