henro to answer your question , I did a lot of research on spreaders , vicon is the best , but you will pay for them . herd is alot cheaper and offers spreading rates like for clover, example 1 pound per acre and they claim it is one of the most accurate spreaders on the market. I looked at the eurospan ,worksaver ,beefco , ect. they do not drop down to 1 pound per acre, hope this helps kully

I know very well the CCM spreaders. Advantages :

1) stainless sttel spreading disc and galvanised steel vanes
2) reversible lift arm pins to adapt it to all hitches
3) gear boxes with 17 teeth gears and not 13 like the others
4) 40' spreading and the possibility to spread 180° or 90° left or 90° right
5) spare parts service made by tsc, asc, wheatbelt stores and many many dealers
6) thicker steel hopper
7) Eurocardan premium quality PTO
8) good looking

( After every use, clean the whole unit completely with a garden hose, then let it sit out in the sun to dry. A leaf blower also helps the drying process. After it's dry, give all metal parts a liberal coat of WD-40. )

3 years ago I purchased a Sirex cone spreader that was manufactured in Italy. I cleaned it well after every use with water, used compressed air to dry it, sprayed it with a penetrating oil before storage, and it still rusted where the bottom plate met the hopper. The unit is powder coated, and the fertilizer attacked the metal under the powder coating because the powder coating cracked and blistered. The rotating spinner is rusted badly under the powder coating also. In my opinion, the plastic hopper and stainless steel components is the only way to go. I purchased the Sirex thinking it was a quality product, but learned the hard way that what looks to be quality might only be poor quality dressed up with red powder coating. Are any that we have discussed in this thread made with plastic hoppers and stainless steel components? If not, how available are replacement parts that usually rust? If either CCI or Sweets has what I am looking for, I am interested. The Sirex was purchased locally... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Andrea, since you know CCM spreaders well, maybe, you can also tell us that they are Cosmo spreaders actually or not?

If I'd waited a little longer (or come to TBN sooner) maybe I could have hooked up with one of the plastic Cosmo units. The TSC steel Cosmo I have appears to use a lot of stainless, except for the red painted cone hopper and frame.

Steel is just not a great material for fertilizer spreaders. I was lulled by the stainless moving parts of the Cosmo, but now the floor of the hopper is exposed (rusting) steel. I used WD-40 as Bowhunter suggested, but it's just a matter of time in my mind. I tried to be careful with my previous steel spreader, but it is now more work than it's worth to try and repair.

Anyway, I've been intrigued by the possible uses of sprayed bedliner material. Six years ago I had the steps/footrests on my little tractor treated by Line-X. They are holding up very well. I am seriously thinking of having the floor of the hopper sprayed, and the inside of the hopper up to just above where the agitator wheel contacts the hopper wall. I believe a stainless washer can be used as a spacer to keep the agitator part that spins just above the floor of the hopper from contact. Maybe that will cure the corrosion problem.

How is your spreader holding up? Is it like the one you have pictured in your initial post on this thread?

My new Cosmo looks just like the one you show. The paint on the bottom of the hopper was completely scraped off with the first use. Even with a good rinse, the exposed steel began rusting right away. Nothing keeps the agitator from scraping on the floor of the hopper. It seems like either rust or scraping will contribute to a short life for the floor of the hopper. Have you done anything special to preserve the floor on your unit?

What spreader is that spreader in the first post of this thread? Looks like *this* (attached) was made by the same manufacturer? *This* is a spreader with a welded hopper?

I can't speak for Mark, but what I think is this:

Cosmo is an Italian manfacturer that markets spreaders under it's own name and few others. I beleive the spreader pictured in the first post of this thread is the LandPride version of the Cosmo. The yellow/black spreader pictured in Ken Sweet's post appears to be exactly like the one Mark has pictured, except for color. I believe Ken's is a First Choice brand. Both look like my Cosmo, from Tractor Supply Co.

The picture in your post obviously shows a funnel shaped hopper, but the frame is different than the others pictured here, so perhaps is not made by Cosmo.

The hopper on my spreader is one piece, not welded.
