CCW question...

Depending on your state, when you apply for your CWP.. you should be given a list of places you can't carry.

If I'm carrying and need to go in the psot office.. i leave mine in my vehicle. Otherwise i carry in any place the law does not preclude it..

I think CCW means carry conceiled weapon, right? If not, that's what I'm referring to.

Question for you guys who have them...

You are carrying and do some errands.... you happen to walk into the post office or alcohol store or Walmart or your bank or.....

Are there some places you can't go while carrying and if so, what exactly do you do when you find yourself in a position of not thinking ahead and you've got your gun with you and need to go to a location?

Do you sit outside while the wife goes in? What if she's not with you, do you put it off or do you leave your gun in car while you go inside?

I'm not trying to be too nosey.... I've just wondered about a few circumstances where carrying a gun might put someone into a funky situation of conflicted welcome.

Surely someone has found themselves at least once in their life in a situation where you think..."Dang.... I need to go to such & such place, but I've got my gun with me and can't take it in there"

?

Hiya,

I would go to the NRA site and review the laws of the jurisdiction your in. Sometimes they vary from county to county and town by town.

I was a mass resident for a short time and they by far have the most restrictive laws I have ever lived under. You had to plan your route in advance just to go to a gun club. When I moved out, I had to drive 100 miles out of my way because I didn't have a permit to possess my M1-A in Boston and would have been in violation just passing through on the highway with it in a locked case. Much nicer to live in the USA again.

My 2 cents,

The post office, court houses, and schools are a few of the places we can't carry in Michigan.

I think it's completely stupid that these places aren't required to have a secure area you can check your gun into a private locker/safe while you conduct your business in a banned location. That should be the law that if you ban carry in a location you should be responsible for secure storage.

I personally have to leave my weapon in my vehicle if I want to go into one of these locations or at work (stupid corporate policy).

Ya really have to check your state laws as has been stated. :D

NC sounds like other states, courthouses, schools, banks, post offices, airports are banned. I THINK banks, post offices, and airports fall under the Feds for NC. Penalty for going into a place with a nonCCW sign is a trespass arrest if you don't leave.

We had a man shot in the head in a post office a few years ago. I happened to drive by the post office frequently at the time. The law sure did not stop than man from being murdered....

Years ago I bought an M1 from CMP. The rifle was mailed in a big long card board box. :D I was not home to accept delivery so I had to go to the post office. You should have seen the lady's face when I gave her my failed to deliver note. :D:D:D:D:D She about had a cow. The rifle was locked up somewhere so she had to go get it. Pretty danged obvious what it was too as she haned it over the counter. :D:D

The looks were precious as I walked out. I wonder how many laws I violated picking my rifle up at the PO? :D

Later,
Dan

DM.. remember.. there is a difference in carry at a post office, and mailing a long gun..

On the other hand, in Ohio, the same places as above are off limits, but if the establishment has a "no CCW" sign posted and you are discovered carrying you can be charged with a CCW violation.

I try to avoid Ohio as much as possible because of their broken CCW law.

I know, but that is the best we have for now. It's fairly new and will evolve into something better in the future. It's already changed a few times since it became law.

Their example of gun control is one that should be studied for how well it has controlled violent crime involving firearms.

I think you can carry everywhere except the "no guns allowed area" Thats where the bad guys hit! I don't want someone shooting me! Big subject locally... BRCC (Blue Ridge Commuity College) allows CCW... (next door to police school)... I think JMU allows CCW on campus...
