Living there I can see where you'd know about NC.
But how did you know about Ohio.?

Lived 52 years in Ohio - 4 years in NC. Owned tractors, trailers cars and trucks in both. :)

Also most unapproved motor vehicles are not permitted to be operated on public roads.

Hey LB, Sorry I thought we were discussing wether or not a tractor had to be titled. Not if it was road legal or be operated on public roads - I guess I miss understood.

What Caused you to leave one of the best 50 states in the union and go to NC?
What city were you located at in OHIO.
I've always been at Marietta.

Hi lp

Note that the info was found on the NJ Dept of Agriculture website, not the DMV site.

Seems that many are searching their home state DMV site for info, maybe their states also have a Dept of Agriculture site or something similar.

My BX did come with a Certificate of Origin from Kubota. (similar to a title)

My dealer said that most people don't ask for them since they are not needed in NJ so they don't provide them to the buyers unless they ask.

If you like to have all of your papers in order then ask for it when you buy a new machine!

I am a little confused. If a tractor is not considered a "motor vehicle" by one's state, anymore than their lawn mower is, or their wheeled cement mixer is, than searching the DMV (or Sec of State) websites for title/registration information is back to the issue raised by Byrd earlier.

It isn't there because it isn't. It isn't a motor vehicle, and isn't going to be discussed. It isn't titled, licensed, or tagged by the DMV, so why mention it?

Why would anyone be surprised that tractors aren't mentioned? Neither are lawn mowers or a half dozen other things. Shall we search for the meaning of those things as well?

The Dept of Ag might mention tractors, sure. Tractors are Ag or construction vehicles. Off road. Period. Whatever rules there might be concerning operation on or along roadways, as a tractor moves from off road site to off road site, is governed by statute or motor vehicle codes.

This seems clear to me.

Inquiring minds want to know.... I was born in Cleveland, OH. Lived between Cleveland and Akron - Macedonia. Drove past Marietta many times back and forth to NC on 77. Left because I was tired of dark skies and SNOW!!:D

perhaps its a manifestion of the mind when it comes to recreational vehicles. They were once free of registrations until one too many bad apples got hurt or pissed people off when they drove by on or near private property. I am talking about snowmoblies, ATVS, UTVS, etc.
The tractors don't go fast, no need to have them registered, and very little reason to use on other properties for fun. Most of the time its always under agreement they the landowner is requesting help so it benefits them so goverment doesnt need to step in and hopefully it stays that way.

Thanks Jeff. I found another helpful link. It officially recognizes that New York States definition of a Motor Vehicle excludes farm tractors (used in agriculture). It also says that the vehicle and traffic law was amended to exclude such farm tractors for the purposes of titles, registration and licensing.

You may go to the New York State link below:

It's a little different in Canada. Here if it is used at all on the road it must be registered, insured, etc. When I say used, I mean if it travels on the road from point A to B. There's a one-time fee of about $35 for registration, which doesn't expire.. ever. I guess they figure if you're going to use the road, you should pay something, even if it isn't much. Of course, it is considered a money-grab, what isn't these days.

I'm kind of surprised that the US doesn't have the same structure or worse, y'all are kinda prone to litigation down there.

Here, if grandpa decides to turn left with the hay wagon when he really shouldn't, there's at least half a chance he has insurance to cover the damage to you and yours.

It's a little different in Canada....

To the best of my knowledge, policies may vary widely from one province to the next. For example, a BX22 (or 23 or 24 or 25) is given the status of a garden tractor in Ontario, where it doesn't require titling, registering or tagging. However, in neighboring Quebec, the above unit is considered a full fledged backhoe requiring a title (or certificate of origin), registration and a tag, even when used solely in the owner's back yard.
