Mornin Moss,
Only problem with your method is that on a Stihl, to have your throttle on, you need to be in full choke mode or partial choke mode !

BTW Im not disputing your method, because you bring up some good points!

I can't afford a Stihl! :D All the chainsaws I have owned and the one's that I have used have a manual choke. :)

Vapor lock is usually associated with bowl type carbs and not diaphragm carbs. Since you says it starts and dies it sounds like there is trash in a fuel line or jet. I'd pull the needle screws out (only after determining how many turns they are set at) and suck some gas through the jet holes with a drugstore baby syringe. It that didn't fix it then I'd take it to the dealer.

Yes!!! Why they combined switch/choke/throttle lock into one function is beyond me. Do they think we are so lazy we can't be bothered to flip a switch and pull a choke? They can also do away with those 'flip' fuel/oil plugs too. That was a solution to a non-existant problme.

I'm not sure about Echo but most saw companies suggest that you have a shop with a tach tune your saw to the correct mixture after you have "run the saw in" with a few tanks of gas. I had a similar starting problem with a Husky (it was flooding though). A few minor adjustments and now it starts and runs great. While you have the saw in the shop I would have the fule tank vent checked as Mossroad suggested.

On my new stihl you just put the switch to the top position, then move it down to the run position, and presto...throttle locked and choke not on. Jonserud has a similar procedure.

Re: the op problem, someone suggested the winter carb setting, that is for sure something to check out. On my saws its not really a carb setting, but a plastic clip that is put in one position for winter use, another for summer use. The clip diverts warm air over the carb, or blocks cold air, can't remember which, same result anyway. Be sure that is in the correct position, if your saw is equiped with this feature.

There should be a fuel vent somewhere on the saw to keep it from building up pressure like that.
With it being as new as it is I would take it in for them to take care of it under warranty.

I like the flip and turn fuel/oil caps on my MS260, I don't need my scrunchi wrench to fill the tanks like on my 025.

My Poulan does the same friggin thing. Runs great, cuts great, just don't shut it of till you're done, cause it doesn't want to restart. Seems like mine is flooded though, cause I can only restart with wide open throttle, no choke, no bulb pumping. Pull pull pull, cuss pull pull pull pull, repeat several times, coughs to life like a flooded engine. This past weekend, I resorted to letting it idle while I put more bar oil in it.

<snip>

Did they change? My 310 is only a few years old and has.

top - off
Next down - run but throttle in idle
Next down - half choke and throttle locked full open
Last - full choke and throttle locked full open.

I have had many saws over the past 30 years and never needed a scrench on any of them. That includes the Johnnyred 625 ex loggers saw from Canada that the guy had hacksawed a slot so the scrench could be used.

To my mind, applying a scrench to a screw-on fuel cap is abuse of equipment. I have heard, altho, that there are some arborists with top handle saws that claim they need to do it or the caps loosen. I would like to see that before I believe it though.

No, its the same, but where'd you get "half choke" from? I guess the little graphic on the saw looks, abit, like a "half-choke", but if you read the manuel you'll quickly see that it is never refered to a choke position at all. Is only refered to as the "warm start" position. I really don't think the carb is choked in that position, just the throttle locked.
