My first winter with the 2210 is here and I'm wondering if I'll need chains to move the snow around. I'll be using the FEL and I have turfs. If chains are in order then is there a specific part number to ask for? I'm assuming that you'd only put chains on the rears but who knows.....

Thanks, wickman

My 2210 has the FEL, 5 ft rear blade and 2-50 lb wheel weights on each rear wheel for 200 lbs total. I have moved a lot of snow with no chains. The 4wd works wonders.

I would try it first without. I think the only need for chains is steep slopes with ICE, otherwise the 4wd gets you through.

I have to agree with Fgross. I put rear chains on my 2210 'cus they were thrown in with my snowblower. I blow snow mostly in 2wd and never spin a wheel. I do have an 8% grade to plow and when it does the freeze/thaw cycle, it becomes a skating rink.

On flat ground I wouldn't worry about chains.

I don't know how steep my asphalt driveway is but when it gets icy I'm afraid to drive on it if that's any indication. I move snow with a snowblower and no chains. With FWD engaged I can go up that slope forwards or backwards with no problem. I haven't tried the FEL but I sure wouldn't put on chains and scratch up expensive concrete and asphalt unless there was no other option. That's one reason I bought the 2210 instead of the X series. Besides, the chains on my old tractor didn't help much on ice - but it was 500 lbs lighter too!

I have been pushing around snow with my 2210/FEL/turfs the last couple of weekends. I would have to guess that my drive is about a 3% grade, and I have no problem in 4WD. 4WD makes all of the difference. I'm not even using any addtional ballast in the rear other than the standard filled tires. In 2WD I definately slip around quite a bit more, and I only switch to 2WD to do final cleanups.
So far, these have been fairly wet snows, not really cold powder. Until I see a problem, I don't think I'll be buying chains. However I'm still on the fence about getting a blower instead of the FEL. It doesn't take a lot of snow to start making big piles.
