Chains - Quick Question

Well, it took a couple hours, but they're at max width now. I would have rather kept them where they were, but chain clearance trumps. They have to be 3" per side farther out. I have pics I can post tomorrow. Will also blow snow tomorrow before work, and that will test it out.

It's weird, cause my dad's 3710 has the same chains, and tires at the mid setting. He has a couple inches of clearance.

Aaah well. Stability, I guess.

I understand the benefits of swapping wheels left to right to change wheel track if the mounting hub is not centered on the wheel. Also maintaining direction of rotaton

Sorry hit send button by mistake

swapping wheels this way puts the valve stem inboard. Do you guys have an inner and outer valve stem? My tires are loaded with rimguard and I adjust the pressure depending if I have the backhoe mounted. This would be very difficult with the valve at 12 o'clock.

On mine, the valve stems are now outboard. hopefully it won't be a problem..........

Wider stance and easy access... Plus Plus.

   / Chains - Quick Question #46
With the tires mounted out you should have room to reach in from behind to access the valve stem with it above the fill line. It is just as safe from sticks and such on the inside as it is on the outside.

You will like the difference when you get out on some side hills shredding.

I suppose. I wish there was a middle ground where I could have a couple inches of clearance instead of 4.
I'll get used to it......

You took the centers off the rims to swap. Another option is to take the entire wheel off to swap. That might have given you the 2" in between setting you desire. Some combination of swapping rims and switching centers should come close to what you're trying to accomplish. Your owners manual should tell you the different ways to set up your wheels with the resulting dimensions.

I think it looks better and again, its gonna have more stability.

yeah. I need to look at the book (or draw/think it out). I may have gone from extreme inner to extreme outer positions.
It isn't getting changed for a few months (if at all), I'll tell you that much!
Man it was cold in the garage.

   / Chains - Quick Question #53
Hey, you don't know cold. LOL
I had to do some repairs the other day and it was -32 (your choice F or C).
Man I was glad when things got fixed!
At that temp my poor fingers can not tell the difference between a 1/2" bolt and a razor blade. Ouch!

Cold, I think I broke a nipple the other day.:p
No, it wasn't a grease nipple.:confused2:

Whenever I'm contemplating some mechanics in the cold I place my hand tools indoors by a heat source (radiator) the night before. When you take them out the next day to use they retain some heat to the touch for an hour or two and make it all less painful. Of course you can't always predict when you might need them.

Those that have made a tire swap need to remember to check all the bolts for torque frequently for the next few times you use the tractor. The rim parts settle in during use and bolts get loose. By the third use and third check you shouldn't find anymore that have loosened up then you can go longer other then to visually check them while the tractor warms up.

tire rotation is important. They are built to go in one direction only. Hope yours are still ok. If you have to do a tire swap, then it could be the right time to have them filled. Filled tires makes a huge difference in traction and stability. Your chains are "light duty", go easy when spining, as they will disapear quick...:confused2:

My chains are light duty? Man, I'd hate to see heavy duty.
I don't spin....at all (now that I have the chains). So no problem there.
My tires are already filled with rim guard. They still point the right direction.
I do need to check the bolts. It was 6AM when I blew, so when I was done I had to get ready for work!

Oh, and -40 is where F and C are the same. Not -32. I know, fingers aren't that precise. It was probably 10 in my garage, and that was plenty cold. I have a circulation issue with pre-mature constriction of blood vessels in extremities, so feel it quicker than most.

This is what heavy duty looks like. :)

A mister heat. propane heater in the garage can take the chill off in a big way. Just give it clear space in front of the burner and crack a window for ventilation.

I had one of these heaters going, but still......

Then all my tools get a layer of frost, due to the moisture from burning the propane.

I just need to get insulation in the attic and hook up the radiant floor. Then haul a BUNCH of extra firewood.

All on my todo list........
