Reading this about forgetting to turn the gas off reminded me of a long forgotten experience with an 8n, but it was forgetting to turn gas back on.
This was back in early '60s. I was just a kid at 12 -13 and was spending a week at my Dad's best friend's (Bob) helping with baling hay. He had an 8n, and even then it was known practice to shut the gas off when leaving it set over night. One morning we had a lot of hay cut ready to bale and forecasting rain that evening so Bob was in a hurry to get started. He jumped on the Ford, I truely did try to stop him, but he took off down the drive to the field. It is really suprising how far those tractors can go on just carbureator full of fuel. Little over 1/4 mile down the drive tractor stops dead, Bob tries to start it no luck. Walks back to the shop, digs out 5 gl can and funnel and heads back to tractor grumbling all the way. Has a few choice words for me, since I was last one to drive it and should have filled it up last night. Bob ahs been playing some good practical jokes on me over past few days so I just bit me tongue. We get to tractor he puts funnel in the tank and starts to dump in the gas. In mean time, I reach under the tank turn fuel on and reach around to make sure tractors in neutral, then hit the starter. About same time fuel started over flowing, since tank was over 3/4 full, the tractor started. I jsut looked at him and said "all you had to do was turn the fuel back on". It was funny, but I was the one that had to carry the other 3 gls. of gas back to the yard.
