Atta Boy, just start um and drive um.

The guy has owned two 8N's. I think he's got it. Everyone forgets stuff once in awhile... How many antique tractors do you own?

I went ahead and changed the oil. The dipstick wasn't over the full mark but I certainly could smell a lot of fuel on the dipstick when I checked. Yeah I was told by an old 8n owner that fuel will run into the engine if I dont shut it off. The weird thing is that when I got back from my week long trip and realized the fuel was on, I started it up and lots of smoke bellowed out the exhaust and then the engine died. There was no fuel in the tank. I could have sworn I had some fuel in it before I left. Anyhow, changed the oil. All is well. Hard to beat these nostalgic American Icon tractors!! I owned an 8n about 12 yrs ago and rebuilt it then sold it. For years I wish I didn't sell it. Now I have this one rebuilt from the ground up. Purrs like it just rolled off the assembly line.
Thanks for all your responses!

if it smelled bad like fuel, then changing it was good.

I had an IH cub do that on me once. in my case, the shutoff valve leaked. and after a few days it filled the crankcase.. cleaned it out real good too!

That would be one heck of a leak to push up into the manifold. Never heard of that happening before...

seen it...

the float valve, if not closing can pee a stream the size of a pencil on a MS TSX carb.. it's one way we check to see if someone has good gas flow.. on another board I frequent.. we tell em to turnt he gas on, remove the bowl drain from the carb and let it pee into a glass.. float stays down, and needle unseated... dirty needle, heavy float, stuck float, or debri blocking needle from seating can all hold the needle off the seat. past that it's simple physics if you have a supply of liquid above a void.

take a 10' garden hose.. put a 5g bucket of water on a picknick table, start the syphon.. as long as the discharge and rest of the hose stays under the water level in the bucket, it will flow.

now.. if the guy only had 1g of gas.. then there just ain't much head or volume there to fill everything.. or fill faster than it might leak out of carb mouth.

10g though? tha's alotta fuel.. and some later fords had even bigger tanks.. etc..

There is evidence in his post he doesn't have it no matter how many tractors he has owned.

Exactly, and that was the purpose of my reply and not to belittle that person.

One, a WD-45 and the price gasoline is I'm not about to let it run into the crankcase.

In that old motor the oil will mostlikely smell fuel like even if you shut down the fuel everytime. I know its rebuilt but its not like its a 2008 Toyota engine with super tight tolerances!

Seems like this would be an excellent place to install an electric inline shutoff valve. Simply wire it in to the run side of the ignition....

How often do you see them available for 6 volt systems?

Another complicated band-aid rather than fixing a simple problem.

I'm grinning at this one. Folks, I totally rebuilt a Ford 8N years ago. Sold it and made a nice profit on it. Prior to that I never owned an old tractor. But, I guess I am gifted with a mechanical aptitude and the attitude of being a perfectionist. That being said I am always, repeat ALWAYS willing to learn. Hence the reason I asked the change oil question on this post. I own an operate a bowfishing guide business. You can see my info (no I am not advertising, just making a point) on bowfishingmadnessdotcom of course dot meaning'.' Anyway, I built a fan engine for my boat with the help of a good friend who is an excellent welder. Never in my life have I even seen a fan engine until I purchased this particular boat. After a bit of research on the internet from others who was willing to share their info on fan builds, I ended up building one of the most well known fan boats out there today. So I want to say thanks to all those who responded. Your replies definitely provided me with some insight. Don't be surprised if I ask a few other 'silly' questions in the future.

all the time... from 6v up to 36v....
One simple electric shutoff will save HOW MANY qts. of oil when you forget to shut off the manual valve???
Personally, i shut off fuel valves even on my ATV's, small equipment, etc.. I set parking brakes on everything.. but some people don't...
Its NOT a complicated fix, its actually quite simple... to each his own I guess..

Reading this about forgetting to turn the gas off reminded me of a long forgotten experience with an 8n, but it was forgetting to turn gas back on.
This was back in early '60s. I was just a kid at 12 -13 and was spending a week at my Dad's best friend's (Bob) helping with baling hay. He had an 8n, and even then it was known practice to shut the gas off when leaving it set over night. One morning we had a lot of hay cut ready to bale and forecasting rain that evening so Bob was in a hurry to get started. He jumped on the Ford, I truely did try to stop him, but he took off down the drive to the field. It is really suprising how far those tractors can go on just carbureator full of fuel. Little over 1/4 mile down the drive tractor stops dead, Bob tries to start it no luck. Walks back to the shop, digs out 5 gl can and funnel and heads back to tractor grumbling all the way. Has a few choice words for me, since I was last one to drive it and should have filled it up last night. Bob ahs been playing some good practical jokes on me over past few days so I just bit me tongue. We get to tractor he puts funnel in the tank and starts to dump in the gas. In mean time, I reach under the tank turn fuel on and reach around to make sure tractors in neutral, then hit the starter. About same time fuel started over flowing, since tank was over 3/4 full, the tractor started. I jsut looked at him and said "all you had to do was turn the fuel back on". It was funny, but I was the one that had to carry the other 3 gls. of gas back to the yard.
