Without getting into all the gory details -
I've ripped apart more engines than I can remember. And one thing I noticed was that the engines that used synthetic had ALOT less wear.
Synthetic also works wonders in manual and auto transmissions.
Seeing is believing.

Well--I'm going to look at a couple vans today and plan on bringing one home tomorrow if the deal goes through.

If there's no leaks I'll consider making the change.

Thanks for all the input.

I don't see that Bob changes much of what he says, unless he has learned more. And the way he is into oil, he knows a lot more about it than you or I. He lives it. And you don't need a block heater on most things even when it is down to 20 or 30 below, even with regular oil. It is all in what you own and are trying to start. It just gives you a sense of knowing that you won't have a problem if it gets colder than that. I thought about synthetic myself, till I checked out the facts on it, and I don't think its worth it, for the price it costs. I have a Chevy truck with over 100 thousand miles on it, that wouldn't seem like a lot, except its a 1977, and they weren't made to run that long back then. Never had the heads off or the valves touched, and runs great, on regular oil, that is all its ever had in it. I guess if you have money to burn, then it don't matter what something costs, I don't have that kind of money.

I converted the following vehicles to synthetic oil without any catastrophic occurrences:

V6 Honda Accord, converted at 42K miles, 5W-30 Mobil 1
300/6 F150, converted at 136K miles, 10W-30 Mobil 1
DK45 diesel tractor, converted at 30 hours, Shell Rotella T synthetic 5W-40

Initially, the Accord used a quart in 3K miles. Two oil changes later, it uses a few ounces. The F150 and the DK45 showed no additional usage. I'm hoping that the synthetics will keep the engine parts cleaner than the petroleum oil. I got tired of the sludge that formed in the top end after strict maintenance and religious oil changes. Less wear would be a plus. Time will tell. An interesting real life study. Long Term Synthetic Oil Study

There have been several recent threads about this. Some people like conventional oil and some synthetic. Since I too have seen the superiority of synthetic on similar engines when torn down vs dino oil and having used Mobil 1 since it was available--I know it is better and yes it will provide better protection faster on a cold start or any start.
A recent test in Sportrider (and there have been many such tests over the years) showed Mobil 1 to be the equal of any oil or better, highest temp capability over Amsoil and equal results on the 4 ball test to Amsoil. I am not bashing Amsoil--fine product--Mobil 1 is cheaper and more available.
Yes, you can switch to Mobil 1 at 50,000 miles. Some older cars back aways had seals that were not compatible with synthetics, Fords especially, and they would seep oil. This is not a problem anymore. Mobil 1 has an older car formula anyway now.
That said, I think your tractor would do fine with Rotella or Rotella Syn or Mobil Delvac or Delvac Syn. Light diesel engines like our small tractors can use Mobil 1 10W-30 as well.
Mobil claims no breakin is required--in other words you can use synthetic from the get go. I would give her 50 hours before switching to give the rings some time to seat.

"And he is an expert on oil" ---- yeah and ain't everybody? J

When I said he is an expert on oil. I am saying that is what he does for living, and that is all he does. No that don't apply to everybody. He works for a oil company, and tests all the time. We don't do that you or I or probably anyone else on the forum. And he don't just test for the oil company, he does it on his own, he is into oil like a lot of people on here are to tractors. So yes I would say he is an expert and most people here aren't. And yes, I would say some people on here would probably be a expert on tractors. Some its just a hobby.

pruntyc (Dick)

Bob is probably a nice guy but I had read some things and he promotes one thing and then down the road it changes. As for the tests that are good for reference only, that’s it, but test per a specification or standard. They are good for FYI material since I would not base a major decision on them…or just fun to read about.

But lets face facts here, in todays market of business unless he has a PHD degree in the study of oil (if there is such), I would say he is not an expert. Just because some does it for a long time and works in the field means he knows a great deal but expert, nope. [censored] I have worked in the Design/aerospace field for over 11 years with a 4-year degree and going for a masters but I am FAR from an expert in Mech Engineering.

As far as knowing a lot yes, but expert?

I have to agree with TresCrows on this one. "And he is an expert on oil" ---- yeah and ain't everybody? J

Oh, since these tractor do not have turbo’s Rotella or Mobil Delvac will be fine. In a turbo app I would say no since at high temps on turbos (over 1000 degree) those oil coke.

But use what you wish. Technology changes and people need to except it unless they like living in the past.

Defination of an expert............ from Merriam-Webster dictionary.....

ex.... a person or thing (as in fiction or drama) that appears or is introduced suddenly and unexpectedly and provides a contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty

spert........flippantly cocky and assured ....

LOL.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Too long and complicated a definition, Junkman.

An "ex" is a has been and a "spert" (OK, spurt) is a drip under pressure.

Of course, when I was traveling doing gas leakage surveys, I heard that an "expert" is a guy from out of town with a briefcase, so I was able to tell the gas companies that I qualified. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also knew of those definitions, but I was trying to be politically correct after someone got there rear chewed today for putting a * in the place of a letter that would have completed a word that is commonplace language....... but this other posted thought that it was improper.... The other post..... it is at the bottom of the page...
