Cheap air chisel for removing tiles...wow!

When I was repairing air tools, I got lots of the air hammer/air chisel tools in for repair and they were frequently the easiest tools to repair. Naturally, there are some high dollar ones that might be worth the cost for some jobs, but I'll bet for at least 90% of what they're used for, the cheap ones work just as well as the expensive ones.

Needle scalers (also known as "chipping hammers") are apparently not that popular, but they're actually a pretty neat little tool for removing rust. I think I've only worked on two of those.

All this has made me think I might actually need a 'needle scaler'.

I've seen those at HF for years and never thought I'd need one.

I'm still waiting on the price to go down on the Fein Multimaster due tocompetetion from the imatators now that the patent has expired. Think it will?

I got a twenty dollar needle scaler that attached to my twenty nine dollar air hammer of 15 years ago.

About sixty hours pretty well wore out the scaler[ needles break] but the hammer just needs a few drops of oil every so often.

Will one of these air chisel work (or air hammer) on a soft concrete like gunnite? There is rebar but most of it comes loose from the rebar easy.

I have a gunnite pool I am demo'ing. I rented a backhoe with a breaker last week and took care of about 95% of the busting up work. I could not reach a small part of the pool wall was it was too far in and too close to the house. The object is to just bust the remaing wall down to about 18" below grade and then back fill. Gunnite is soft and can be busted with a sledge if needed but given my age, back and other alements I would rather not do it the hard way. The backhoe was great but had some rental issues and had to get their service guy out a couple of times,

Doug, the air chisel will do the job, but depending on how much you need to do, it might be a bit slow. I helped a son-in-law, several years ago, to take a tub/shower out of his parents' home and install just a shower. That meant moving the drain location and it was a concrete slab foundation. We carved out a pretty good sized trench in the concrete with a Harbor Freight air chisel that he bought.

When I made my own chain guards for a brush hog, I cut up the chain with my old Harbor Freight air chisel. I'd just lay the chain aross a piece of railroad track that I had and two quick hits with the air chisel would cut one link in two.

The user friendliness of this would go up if you had a way of holding it with both hands. If you could find one that has a side handle like the larger drills, even that would be a help.

I wear gloves and guide the tip with one hand and the hammer with the other.
