I removed the winch and noticed part of the housing was broken, so I just purchased on ebay a whole new winch system for the spare.

Easy solution. Buy a dually. I have 2 spares wherever I go already bolted on. They took my winch out putting in tank and motor for hayspikes. On any given day I use a lot of my bed space so I generally leave the spare at home. If I am pulling a heavy trailer and/or going more than 50 miles from home I will toss it in the bed.

Exactly, rolling spares. Ya need 4 tires to get home in an emergency, a dually with a spare is 7, so you can get 3 flats :)

Couldn't agree more. Plus I used to have a 3 legged dog and he got around just fine.

I had cable break on my '86 Chevy S10 4x4, back in '88 or so. Was washing the truck when I saw cable hanging down.

Used to go playing in mud holes; guessing it happened in a mud hole and I never knew/noticed.

If the spare fell out of an Excursion, the back doors would have to come open first because the thing is mounted inside the vehicle.

It's is a good idea to check spares. Not just to make sure they come down but to make sure they are not flat. Just replaced the spare in my 2000 because it dry rotted and would not hold air anymore.

That is a good point. I like to max out the air pressure on the spare, then even if I forget to check the spare for a while, it should still have enough air.

My 1992 Chevy Silverado Has one of those underneath hand crank spare tire carriers. I'm thinking of moving the spare into the bed. Would make it much more handier to get to.

Hadn't lost the spare from underneath there thank goodness. It's in the way anyway as I've got a good receiver hitch that would fit the truck if I just get that spare out of there.

I could get one that fits around the spare but why do that when I got this perfectly good hitch and don't need the spare underneath there anyway.

I always thought it was an inconvenient bad spot to put a spare. lol
