Checking Rod Bearings

I need to check the rod bearings on a newly acquired Kubota B7610. It only has 206 hours, but it's occasionally making a "tinny" clatter that the other B7610 that I have doesn't make. Can I drop the pan and check without splitting the tractor?

I don't know if you can drop the pan without splitting it or not but you would think if it's a rod bearing it would be a constant "tinny" clatter, not occasionally.

Do an oil analysis instead. You'll soon know if there are abnormal amounts of rod bearing material in the oil.

My brother me that my Kubota had a tinny sound that he did not like... that was 4 years ago, mine has always had a sound different than the diesel tractors we had when growing up...

If it was a rod bearing making noise, it wouldn't run for very long. Look somewhere else.

I think I've found the source. Not certain, but it sounds like a baffle in the muffler has come loose. Pressing on the side of the muffler almost silences it. Pretty certain now that it's nothing serious. Thanks for your help.

Amen! I've run into similar fears in the past with automobiles with sounds coming from flex plates, mufflers, and all sorts of things rattling. If it were a rod bearing he'd hear the noise when applying a load, not all the time. And that rattle would become VERY pronounced in short order.

Well I'll just give some more "terrible" advice. Red (or orange) high temperature silicone will stand up to exhaust heat. We use it on exhaust manifolds all the time. If you can pinpoint the location of the rattle, drill a hole into the exhaust and push in a bit of high temp silicone the rattle will stay silenced. Especially if you can drill holes in several places.
