Cherry Tree Log worth anything?

What size logs are worth something to someone?

I am clearing land for a barn and will be removing 5-6 cherry trees.

They are fairly straight and about 10"-14" diameter.

Do you think someone would ghive me something for them or should I just cut them up for firewood.

I would love to have a portable sawmill and cut them up myself, but then I'd also have to find someone with a kiln to dry them. I can't afford to spend any money now.

Any thoughts? (Also, if they are worth something, how to find someone who wants them?)

My gut tells me they are worth $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Call a local word worker, fine furniture builder and see what they say. don't cut them down or do anyting until you know.

There are some old posts regarding the value of lumber- you may try a search. For the quantity you have I doubt that a commercial operation would be interested. BUT, as a woodworker I would be very interested. I would ask around, there should be a portable sawmill operator that could help you out. If you can use the wood you could have them milled for now, stack them so they air dry and don't warp, then have the lumber down the road. Around here it would cost around $50 ro $75 to have them milled.
If the logs are of high enough quality you may have luck selling them for veneer. I'd call a local forester and ask.

In general saw mills require logs to be at least 12" on the small end for them to have any interest. You may find someone with a portable sawmill who can cut them up for you but keep in mind that the desirable wood in cherry is the hartwood, the outside 3 or so inches is still white and does not have the desired color, so you won't get much usable wook.

I usually sell my cherry when they reach 22 to 24 inches at 4 feet above the ground.

Most areas have a county forester or Extension service who can give you names of log buyers. There are usually publications for your area posting the range of prices paid for different species of wood that a local forester can direct you to.

You can place an add in the paper, many woodworkers are looking for cherry wood for turning and furniture purposes.

You many not get rich off these logs but don't under estimate the value either.

You can air dry the wood yourself should you decide to have it milled into lumber. Cherry dries pretty good if "stuck" correctly in a dry location.

I have a portable sawmill and have milled out quite a bit of cherry and made some nice cabinites and other furniture items out of it.

To the right person those logs are worth some money. Cherry is a beautiful wood and one of my favorites !As others have said, find a local sawyer and get those logs sawed up and sticker them properly to dry. Around here, cherry that is dried is going somewhere around $5 per board foot. After you get it dried, advertise in a local paper. If I was in your area I would be very interested. I hired a portable mill owner and had it converted to lumber at .15 a board foot. It was carefully end sealed, stickered and air dried in the garage with a considerable amount of weight on top. I ended up with 1800bf of 5/4 cherry and the same amount of veneer quality rock maple. Still have all the maple since my wife insists on piling her crap in front of it so I can't reach the lumber, but have used most of the cherry. It's a dream to work with!

You will get the parameters that you will need to move forward on a decision. The trees you mention are on the small size, but that doesn't mean they don't have value. Will depend on your interest in just selling logs, or getting lumber from the logs to either keep or sell.
