Cadillac cars are pretty decent, they just can't compete with BMW even if they had an equal or superior car because most people buying BMWs want the name, and also because of the bad gm publicity.

BMW is name. I admire what they get out of a car.

Decent cars. Not great. Overly complex solutions to simple problems. Never met a BMW tech that had a nice thing to say about them.

The older models are pretty good though.

Caddy also built some real trash through the years. Have really improved in the last 5yrs or so.

The money is being spent to develop new product.
Then where is the awesome new product? Because they sure haven't produced any substantially improved models. I do like the new Impala, but the rest of the lineup is seriously lagging.

Buick competes with the likes of Acura. They sell in decent numbers also.

Acura is not exactly the best model to follow nowadays. :)

Despite the Chevy car line being so terrible, it has done pretty well with the Cruze, Impala, Equinox and the Camaro that nearly always outsells the Mustang.

The Camaro outsells the Mustang because there was a lot of pent up demand being cancelled for years. And the Mustang is OLD! The sales numbers have narrowed recently.

Ford comes up with excuse after excuse as to why Lincoln doesn't sell. What's next? How long has it been since they built a competitive car that sold in volume at all?

Caddy is similar in sales. Only more and atleast the cars are competitive. They are also nearly all new.

Really, who cares about Lincoln! As I said earlier, Lincoln doesn't pay the bills. Ford could cancel Lincoln and it wouldn't lose any major profits. Ford is taking a calculated approach to resurrecting Lincoln. Have patience, it will be here, and will due extremely well due to sharing platforms and not relying on high-dollar platforms that it has to pay for on its own.

That's the problem with trying to compete with BMW. Your car could be 10 times better than BMW (and many Caddy's are better than BMW), but without that name, nobody wants them.

Sonic, Verano, Encore, MCE Lamdas, 2014/5 trucks and SUVs, small truck, Vette, LaCrosse, Regal, impala, ATS, CTS, XTS and Volt. Probably some more I've forgotten also.

Last I checked the Mustang got a revamp more recently than the Camaro.

The Caddy platforms are pricy. Better of late, but still pricy. They will underpin many new cars from Camaro to Holden.

A couple of the Buicks are nice, and the Caddy's are top notch.

However, the real vehicles that need to carry the weight and make money for the company are less than stellar. That's GM's problem. They want to spend all the money on the niche products that will pull in a few sales, and neglect the ones that are needed to make money for the company.

Take the '14 Silverado like I mentioned above. It barely equals the competition!
The Volt? Please, they're practically giving them away with rebates! And you can buy a Ford Fusion Energi with more space, better all-around car, slightly less range, for just a tad more. The Volt? Oh, it only seats 4 people!
The Lambdas? Seriously? Compare one of them to an Explorer or a Ford Flex. I'll even offer our 5 year old, 65k mile Ford Flex for comparison. The Ford interior trumps the Lambdas hands-down.
The Camaro and Mustang both got revamps for '13 (or was the Camaro '14?).
GM doesn't have a small truck, yet. It's coming...
The Vette? OK, yeah, it's a nice car, but again, a niche product that doesn't keep the lights on.

And just selling lots of vehicles doesn't cover it. You have to make money, not discount them to the point of giving them away just to keep the lines moving. You have to make money on it or it doesn't count!

The old Lamdas are just that, old. The '14's are much improved in materials. These are the MCE.

The Camaro had remained pretty much untouched since release. The Mustang got updates in 2010 and 2011.

My point is that GM is VASTLY improved over where it was pre bailout. They aren't perfect. Far from it. But Ford isn't either.

I guess we will have to wait and see.....but GM states that profits will be up big time once they get the rest of the new product out.

I will agree that GM is better, but they are not as much better as they should be. They have a long way to go, and are lagging behind everyone. Of course they are going to say profits will be up big time, but if their recent product (Malibu, Silverado in particular) are any indication, I'm not so sure.

I never said Ford was perfect. They have had some set backs this year with a few quality glitches, etc. My Ford Touch is one that bit them a couple years back. But, given the circumstances, and the fact that GM had a HUGE gift, which one do you think has done better? Which one has picked up market share while improving profits (per vehicle) at the same time?

Like I said, I want GM to do well! I want to see more manufacturing here in the US, and automakers are a tremendous part of that.

CR can't even correctly evaluate toasters! I quit listening to anything CR said about anything 30 years ago - right before I bought the worst TV on the market, which they claimed was light years ahead of everyone else'. No... I'll just take a chance doing my own evaluation, thank you.

CR's in the business of collecting money for memberships.

Ford Motor Co. Does U-turn on Bailouts

While Ford was not "bailed out", they did lobby for the bill that bailed out the others AND they took government loans in the past. So, FORD DID BENEFIT ON THE BACK OF THE TAXPAYERS.

Now can we just get on with discussing the technical merrits of each manufacturers' products and leave the political rantings out of it?

Ugh, for real. The bailout debate should be freakin over already. It was necessary and saved thousands of US jobs, and likely the economy. Treasury's stake in GM is down to what, 7% now? let's move on.

I have really enjoyed watching the progression of pickup trucks over the last 10 years since I started paying attention. The quality and features are really impressive to me now. Unfortunately, the price has escalated along with them.

While I don't like the giant-hood shape of the newer rams, the soon to arrive 3.0L ecodiesel has my interest.
