Well I haven't found time to work on the coop at all this week, I am hoping to carve some time out this weekend. The one thing I noticed about hwat I have done so far is that the wood must have been waterlogges and expanded when I put it in because I cut it tight but now the cracks are very evident. Lots of caulk I guess.

Bmac, Have you made any progress?

We've made some progress since the last photos of windows, doors and nest box.

You may recall that my design called for roost boxes on each side of the front door and a "foyer". I framed one roost box and the foyer and lined the inside of the box with luan. I also framed one of the side walls of the opposite roost box. However, after measuring the 1st one, we've decided that we have ample roost space with 1 box (almost 12 linear feet for 20 little bantams). So, unless I'm told differently here, I'm going to abandon the 2nd roost box, enlarge the foyer and (taking 4270 Owner's suggestion) use that space for food storage. That will entail only a minor modification of the plan with just a little demolition.

I covered the exterior of the nest box with T1-11 and made the hinged lid. My wife has been working on the interior window stop molding (all cut to length and weather stripping applied).

Tomorrow, our plan is to finish the interior framing of the modified foyer, hang chicken wire to enclose the foyer, build the roost frame (that sits atop the roost box and has the roosts on it), complete the installation of the window stop molding, hang wire mesh on the inside of the windows, frame out the "chicken door", hang the screen door that completes the foyer and whtever else is necessary to move the chickens to the coop. Realistically, I doubt we finish this list. But, that's our goal.

I'll update pictures once we've completed the interior work. Sadly, I still have alot of work left, even after we move the chickens to the coop. I have to build the pen, cut the opening for the "chicken door" and build their ramp to the pen, make the clean-out doors for the roost box, complete the soffits, do the exterior trim around windows and doors and other things that I just cannot think of right now.

Thanks for asking.

bmac,

I really admire all the efort and detail that you are putting into your chicken coop. I'm sure there are those who have gone to greater extremes, but you are right up there with the best of them!!!!!!!!!

I'm curious if you had any idea how many hours you would spend on this, will continue to spend on this, and how much of your regular life has been put on hold to build your chicken coop? LOL

Gotta love it,
Eddie

Thanks for the kind words, Eddie.

As far as hours invested - I haven't counted (and I really don't want to know :D ). I know my daughter got her chicks somewhere around the 17th of March, I think. I started on the brooder about 2 weeks or so before they arrived and continued for another week after they arrived. As you remember, I spent an inordinate amopunt of time researching and designing the coop before I broke ground. Early April is the best I can estimate on the start date. So, here I am 2 1/2 months later and still working.

My vacation starts a week from tomorrow. By the end of my vacation week, I hope to have everything completed - pen, trim and detail work. We'll see.

As far as the impact the coop has had on my "normal" life - well, not much during the week as I normally don't get home from work until 7 PM or so, so I usually don't work on the coop Mon-Thurs. Fridays, I'm usually home by 2 PM and usually get to work on the coop by 3. Work till dark and pick it up again Sat AM. As I've mentioned before, a trip the HD or the lumber yard can take a sizable chunk of time out of a Saturday. Sundays, usually don't start until after church and lunch. Today, it was about 2 PM when we got started. So, its been a priority on the weekends and we haven't done much except coop work on Sat & Sun. Yesterday, we did spend a few hours looking at a car for my teenage son. It was a nice break.

As I suspected, we did not complete our objectives for today. My wife finished the windows and screens. I finished the roost frame, demo'd the short wall inside the front door and built the new redesigned half wall. My wife hopes to get the chicken wire up inside tomorrow (to keep chickens out of the "foyer"). If she's successful, the chickens will be moved into the coop tomorrow.

Yeah!!!!! We moved the chickens to the coop tonight!

It's late, so I'll be brief and get to the photos of the interior.

Here's looking into the coop from the back door. The screen door seperates the coop from the foyer. On the right side of the screen door is the roost box. To the left, behind the half wall, is the storage area of the foyer.

Through the screen door on the right is the storage area of the foyer. Still filled with junk right now. But, at 11PM, we were just trying to get the chickens in, not clean up.
