Child labor laws? We don't need no stinkin' child labor laws!

My experience raising two sons leads me to believe some naturally are of the "live to work" variety, and some are of the "work to live" sort. And I don't think you can make one from the other. You can certainly teach responsibility, but not innate drive.

The "live to work" child never had a paying job until he graduated from college. We were living in Germany under SOFA agreements while he was in high school so that ruled out working in the local economy. In spite of that idle upbringing , he works too hard, always reaching for the next goal, etc. He is very successful in those terms.

The "work to live" child worked summers in restaurants beginning when he was 16 through high school. Took a swing at college and missed. Has always had a job, but as long as it meets his basic needs, that's all he really cares about.

I couldn't say which is happier in life. I know which one burdens himself with excess stress.
