I'm not familiar with those chippers but Baileys online may have those blades. When you get them sharpened always get them sharpened as a set to keep them balanced. It doesn't take much weight difference to cause a vibration. I get my knives sharpened at a local Vermeer dealer for about $8 each. Keeping them sharp will help with less vibration. If they are dull they sort of pound their way thru the wood instead of shearing it off. The anvil (deck) needs to have a good edge as well. So rotate that or get a good edge put on it. The proper knife/ anvil clearance is also very important. Too much gap will cause problems.
If you get a machine shop to do the work make sure they know what they are doing. If they grind off the edge and heat it too much it will affect the metal hardness.

Treemonkey,
Thanks for the info. I may follow that route eventually.

Dking, going through is like going through butter. But with all that big wood I see a mill in your future - would hate to see it all chipped - no pun intended!!!! If there is any resin - spray it with oven cleaner to remove it. I also use the stuff on my tale saw to keep the blade clean.

Old trout - I sent your a private email...

Oven cleaner - thanks for the tip. I think I'm going to the dealer Monday and get one.

Rich, you should be getting a free set of blades with that chipper, March 31st the Wallenstein "Winter FREEze" promotion ends. I took delivery of my BX42 last Saturday and got my free blades. Ask the dealer about the promotion and where your blades are. Would hate to see you get cheated out of parts you should be getting for free. Hope this helps you out.

This is going to be interesting. The dealer says, "you only get the free blades if you pay list price." Wallenstein says, you get the free blades regardless of what price you pay." The dealer said," I contact them Monday and set them strait and if Wallenstein wants to send you a free set of blades direct they can."
I copied this from the Wallenstein website.

I don't think so. I'm not paying list price and I get a free set of blades. You buy the chipper at whatever price, you get a free set of blades and wallenstien settles with the dealer.

I have found nothing that says you only get the blades if you pay a certain price, you bought the chipper you get the free blades, plain and simple, if your dealer gives you crap about it, call wallenstein directly and tell them how your dealer is saying you only get the blades by paying a certain price. This makes me wonder how many people they may have cheated out of the free blades by not telling the buyers about the promotion. Some dealers may just put the free blades in their supply and sell them and make 100% profit off of them.

And some dealers may not meet the eligibility rules. In the attachment above, look especially at eligibility rule #5 - could be a deal killer for some dealers. Or like Timberman said, more profit for the dealer.

Picked up the chipper today and also received an email from the seller stating tha when I send in the warranty they will refund the $150 I paid for the blades.
Thanks for the info Timberman444. I owe ya one.

No problem Rich glad I was able to help. Your going to be very happy with your chipper, I find myself looking for anything that needs cutting now that I got mine. Also hoping some good thunderstorms roll through this summer and bring down a few limbs:D

lloyd,
When my chipper knives come back from the sharpener they are literally as sharp as a knife. They will cut you in a heart beat. I have a manual feed Bearcat chipper. I don't think I get much more than 15 hours before the knives need to be sharpened. Even when the chipper stops working well the knives can look sharp. The sharpener uses some kind of liquid cooled rig and he keeps the knives the same size so they balance. Are your knives held in by locktited bolts? Are all your bolts tite?

Chris,

Thanks...

I will probably dip them in paraffin and wrap in paper when they arrive back.

I looked at my record book and I guess I had more than the estimated hours.
I had a total of 40+ hours. So I will swap - reverse every 40 hours and send second set out.
to be sharpened when appropriate.

thanks

I have a PATU DC40 chipper. I have put about 500 hours on it since I bought it used, and have never even thought about the blades. I can throw in a 5" oak, and it will slice it into slices perfect for an oak sandwich.
