Sweet Tractor has this thing that they call a renovater:

And this thing which they also call a pasture renovater. Looks tough:

They are calling this a chisel plow, it looks more like a very light duty cultivator:

But THIS looks like the real deal. They call it a chisel plow. No springs. Interchangeable points. Looks like it might have shear bolt protection, hard to tell.

They have it listed for $795.

As you can see, and as FWJ said, there is a lot of variation in terminology between 'chisel plow', 'cultivator' and 'renovator'.

First and last one's are Farnham pasture renovators. Last one has a bit of "farmer engineering" done to it with the addition of chisel plow points. #3 is a plain ol' cultivator ( as in ROW CROP cultivator) I'd like to see someone sink that'n 12" into hard clay. It would fold like a pup tent. Not sure what exactly #2 is. None of the 4 are chisel plows in the literal sense.

The size and beefiness of the shank helps denote a chisel plow as well. I found these words at Krause Plow (we used those on the farm):

"Spring loaded shanks provide flexibility with superior strength and wear. The hardened iron guide and heat-treated steel bushing at the top of the spring holder reduces wear and allows the shank to flex.

1-1/4" x 2" x 30" shanks offer nine-inch trip height to clear rocks and other field obstacles thus protecting the unit from damage.

Rigid shanks are 1-1/4" x 2" x 30" and offer low cost reliability for farms where rock is not a concern. "

So these shanks are from steel that is 1.25 inches THICK and 2 inches wide--that's a lot of iron.

i have an old 9 shank chisel plow that i tried to pull with a 90hp kubota. i could control the depth with the wheels so i could tear up the ground 6-8 inches but that was all did better with two shanks removed but i was stillunder powered. ended up paying a real farmer to work it up with a heavy bog. 2 passes had former pasture land worked up nicely. i let i dry a couple days and lightly worked with disk and drag. i would like to find a small wheel bog that a 90hp utility tractor can handle.(don't know if there is such an item)

Here is a 6 footer, but not a wheeled one:

Even this 8 footer doesn't have wheels. How do you transport it?

Once they were on a farm you just straightened them out so the disc ran straight. When you wanted to use them to cut you lifted the lock and let them fold into working position. They tend to be very noisy when you run them down gravel roads. If you have to haul them and distance over a paved road you had to load them onto a trailer.

I have a 6' Taylor-Way tandem disc that works like this. It is a nice disc but too small for most of my use now. I also have a 5' offset disc for vineyards that works great behind my 1920.

for the mid size tractor you can check out these folks. They make darn good equipment at a fair price. They make chisel plows and the prices are there too. I bought one last year. It did a great job for me.
