Chucke2009

Johnny Cash used to sing a song called, The One on the Right is on the Left. It was about the disaster that befell a folk group when it turned political. I thought about that song when Chucke started ranting about politics.

The video I posted on the first page features Jonathan Haidt speaking among other things, a reaction against safe spaces and groupthink to the rise of "dangerous" schools where students will be exposed to diversity of thought. One of my friends is a superintendent of schools here in MN and normally when we talk shop, I hear about management issues, but I think I'll ask her about freedom of speech and sharing unpopular opinions.

That said, I don't rely on Lance to do my thinking either.

Safe spaces breed intolerance in my experience.

Here's some good stuff to talk about with your friend :)

Mark and everybnody else who wants to string Lance up,

It is okay to have diversity of thought--after all that is the risk of free speech that we'll hear something we don't agree with. Automatically turning your back on somebody because of a lack of shared opinion shuts down discussion and increasingly leads to intolerant totalitarian group think where outliers and nonconformists are persecuted in various ways beginning with shunning. Your company sponsored Lance to drive sales, and Lance as a person is entitled to an opinion. If everybody bails because we cannot agree on everything or cannot abide hearing something disagreeable, then none of us would have any customers, friends, or relatives. Bailing is not the path going forward for those in support of freedom of speech.

I always enjoy your posts Eric, and I do support freedom of speech and diversity of opinions. But speaking for myself here, there are some ideas I won't tolerate or entertain, hate, racism, cruelty to animals, child ****, and violence to helpless people being among them.

It痴 pretty clear that Chucke doesn稚 share your opinion on diversity of thought, right down to reading helpful comments on farm equipment repair.

"Controlled speech", "banned speech", "unacceptable speech", those all exist.. Free speech or freedom of speech is a long gone concept. In reality it just isn't there anymore. Gone.

Setting free speech aside, as a fellow YouTube creator, I can see why somebody would stop reading comments as just enough of them are caustic, evil, soul-sapping little trolls that frequently assume things from arguments from silence. I enjoy the good questions, the helpful hints, and general good-hearted ribbing, but there are enough comments that do little else but rob you of the joy of creating and helping others, that just get deleted or hidden from even small channels like mine.

Changing subjects, as a Swede who grew up in a largely Jewish neighborhood, I'm not thrilled with Lance's view point, but that's the risk of free speech: namely people will all too frequently say something truncated, over-simplified, freakishly uninformed, bluntly stupid, mind-numbingly shallow, make assumptions from silence, project their false opinion into the gaps, and much more. Even so, that's the tapestry I prefer when discussion is able to take place rather than the group think that exists even within places like this forum where I cannot even share my real life experiences with a certain tractor manufacturer without suffering fools and then moderation.

As someone affiliated with the company that has had a relationship with ChuckE, I too am baffled and disappointed. His post was more of a rage than a reason. He quoted distorted or out of context "facts" and made off the wall assumptions and conclusions imho. We are still evaluating our official response. But with the founder of our company being an immigrant forced to flee persecution, it would be ludicrous to believe that Everlast supports this kind of statement. He has obviously had others in on his show too, including HTP, Miller, Hypertherm, et al. Seems like he has burned some bridges. Though there is no excuse for it, I truly hope what was said was a product of youthful ignorance and brashness. Though not in this stream of thought, I can say my thoughts have changed over the year on various subjects as age has set in. Something I hope he learns to regret. Yes, freedom of speech is important, but so is freedom of association, and people can choose to listen and respond as they deem appropriate. My view and thoughts are much different than his I can assure you. My views of the world greatly changed the summer of my 21st birhday when I spent a month solo in the African bush on an Agricultural mission project.

Reminds of when I was in college and worked for Lowe's part time. The local grand dragon of the KKK was a roofer. He'd come in occasionally. Paradoxically His reputation was of being a good roofer, going so far as to go around on his hands and knees picking up loose nails and screws, and protecting shrubbery from damage etc. But we had to wait on him as any other customer. He made some racist comment toward a fellow worker that was waiting on him and I told him he (the employee) was the hardest worker we had...which was the truth. The fellow employee did a stand up thing though. He told me that he'd wait on him just like any other customer and was in the middle of pulling down sheathing for him with the fork lift from the top bunk. The guy (employee) was a fire fighter part time and he really made an impression on me as being a model of what is RIGHT in America. The customer was a prime example of what is wrong...but is tolerated because of our beliefs and ideals.

Mark, I might by an Everlast just because of your thoughtful post.

The OP's lament was the about the youtube channel changing from information/educational content to a political rant. And his loss of an educational / entertainment source.

As the content creator chucke2009 may create whatever videos he wants. It is alright for him to change the core content of his videos.

Those around his also have the right to change how they interact with the videos. The sponsors can elect or not to provide him funding. The hosting platform can decide what videos they want to host. Youtube is a private entity and 1st amendment does not apply to their choices what to allow. The viewer can choice to watch or not. Comments can be posted then read, not read or removed.

Even here, TractorByNet has provided us a forum allowing us to discuss the changes chucke2009's youtube channel has taken. As noted in a post early on this forum does have limitation how far the discussion is allowed to go in to specific politics. I am thankful to Muhammad for providing us this platform and allowing this discussion to continue.

Society has become more divided in to political view point groups. Chucke2009 appears be learning that mixing politics in to business is a good way to lose a chunk of your customer base/audience.

Disclaimer: I have not watched chucke2009's videos. These comments can apply to folk leaning in either political direction. In over 20 years of consulting I have listened to many' client comments about politics I don't agree with but didn't respond. As other's have said political discussions are better keep out of business relationships. Have those discussions with friends and family. There you can be the equal opportunity bigot and insult anyone without losing clients.

Before decideing what Chucke2009 is giving up in the way of following, sponsership and money,we must consider radio,TV,magazines and newspapers with their widely contrasting audiences. There are followers of all kinds of ideas and Chucke2009 might be swapping one audience for another. I've known Lance (strictly by the net)since he was too young to drive and asking for welding advice himself. Adversity has followed him ever since. I well remember soreheads on Yesterday's Tractors consistantly beating him up for one thing or another and people in general saying he was undeserving of attention equipment mfgrs and u-tube subscribers were givring him. I have a feeling Chucke2009 might only be getting started. Several successful and/or influential people have been labeled as losers despite climbing life's ladder higher than their detractors. I believe everyone here know's a mighty successful individual who is criticized or praised daily for what they say and do. Not only is beauty in the eyes of the beholder,so is success.

For him to make money doing what he does he needs sponsors. Companies wanting him to push their products, you tube placing ads, etc. In today’s politically correct world no big business is going to want to associate with him. Regardless of what anyone thinks about it big corporations are so careful to not do anything that might offend a minority group or cause them to be labeled as racists, homophobic, whatever.

Chucke has a lot of talent (and a lot yet to learn) and I am sure he will do fine in life. It is just crazy to watch him destroy what he worked so hard to build up over the past ten years. I am sure he has thousands of hours invested in building up his channel, he has a half million followers, was making good money doing what a whole lot of people would call a dream job, etc.

I have some opinions and views on things that are not widely popular but I keep them to myself and my close friends and family. I sure don’t go broadcast them to those who provide my income.

ChuckE2009's YouTube channel is enough to keep him fully employed without sponsorship. Assuming a 2/3rds income, ChuckE2009 is making $80K to 90K per year from YouTube alone during the slowest time of the year for advertisers. Although ChuckE2009's channel is huge in comparison to my own channel, if I assume the bump in ad revenue from October through the end of the year, ChuckE2009 is likely earning around $120K per year from YouTube revenue. Not only that but everything used in a YouTube video can be written off on some table even before 179 write-offs which I would suspect are things like the Kubota, the trailers, the attachments, et el. YouTube income alone can be very lucrative if you can grow a channel large enough to have enough ad revenue against which to write down against come tax season.

Moreover, if ChuckE2009 is transitioning from an autos channel to an entertainment channel, YouTube will send his channel more search results as entertainment videos keep eyeballs watching ads whereas how-to and autos videos normally lead to somebody chasing right back out to the garage to fix the very thing they just watched getting fixed on YouTube breaking the eyeball, ad-watching cycle that YouTubes algos try to keep blazing at full speed.
