Kentrogun,

My dipstick comes through the side panels. When a tractor has been sitting and is cold your talking ten seconds to pull the stick and see where the level is. You don't even have to wipe the stick, pull it out, check level, put it back in. A ten second process. Common sense tells me to check it every time when your talking about a motor that is as expensive as it is.

murph

Murph, couldn't agree more. Re-read what I wrote. I check mine VERY often. Hard lesson learned I might add.

The CK30 has no site glass for the tranny. It does have one for the front axle but you have to add way more than the specified amount of gear lube to get it up to the midpoint of that glass.I have ridden plenty of motorcycles with site glasses on the engine case for engine oil level. Perhaps the site glass is a weaker and more failure prone design than a dipstick.

.... Guys, I really don't have a problem with checking the oil level as often as you wish. I don't think it is a required step crucial to the longevity of your machine IF you are confident that you have got everything else under control....

Haven't you ever thought you did something only to find out later, you didn't? Forgot to tighten a bolt, put on your seat belt or left the curling iron plugged in?

Many a confident pilot skipped his checklist and paid with his life... get in the habit of making a checklist and using it for maintenance tasks. Then the only thing you have to do is remember where you put the list! :)

I forgot to put the plug back in a 9270 CIH 4WD once... oil was running out all over the ground when I started to fill it... Me and my FIL each overfilled my old lawn mower and saw the same white smoke. I did it on my first oil change.... i could just not see the oil on the stick... he did it trying to help me out... put in the same amount his took... excoet mine took have as much... and mowed for an hour before it puffed.... had oil all the way back into the bowl on the carb...changed plug and drained everything.... oil on the muffler took 45 mintues to burn off, but she ran fine after that... till the tranny burnt up... that's another story and it lasted a full year from when I abused THAT.... Cross your fingers... with any luck you will be OK.

Whoa cowboy. I was right with you right up until the curling iron part.

Now, I admitted that I left the oil drain plug out by accident, but you'll never catch me ever admitting that I left a curling iron plugged in!

Update from the Dirtcutter. For various reasons I couldnt get to a dealer however one of my friends is a diesel mechanic and he took a look at my ck30 for me. He felt that the motor should me fine and the white smoke was from the mix of fuel and oil. I also spoke to my brother who his an heavy equipment operator he felt I didnt do that much damage, because I stop the engine when the white smoke first appeared. I have put on about six hours of hard tractor work in the last week and everything seems ok. Only time will tell but I think I dodge a BIG BULLET and you know from now on I will always double check.

I forgot to mention on that lawn mower engine that had been over filled twice... it is still running... we took it and used it to run a log splitter.... still runs like a top! :D

rback33,
A trick I learned here on TBN is do drill a small "sight" hole in your dipstick(s). I'm pretty blind too anymore but this really helped me. Now I've got sight holes in all the dipsticks.

The disptick on my vortec 350 in my 98 chevy pickup has 4 site holes installed by GM. Someone had their thinking cap on that day.
