My JD hydro has a hydraulic clutch, but is electrically activated - a kinda hybrid I guess. For the finish mower, full rpms is best prior to engaging PTO because at low rpms the startup torque puts too much of a load on an idling engine. Even so it activates slow, feathering itself a bit, with no apparent hard impact. I'm not sure how others work. But have read a number blogs where the solenoids go bad in short order. I've had my JD for 12 years, about 700 hours and no problems yet. But, then again that's what I paid for by buying JD.
