At least the picture is dark so we can't feel the warmth of the sun through the photo.

I may as well throw my experience in. I bought 15 acres of land to probably build on. At the least I would improve it and enjoy it as a rec/investment piece. I bought a small bulldozer, loved it for about 1.5 years and sold it with a 1000$ loss. I put no less than 10,000$ of additional value into the property in the form of clearing and grading roads into and around the property. Then I hired the big boys, a logger, to come out and take the merchantable timber and the stumps it was connected to from about 1.5 acres. They also burned all their slash plus 1.5 years worth of bulldozer slash piles. I paid another 1800$ for that service but the property gained no less than 18,000$ in value. (See the trend) Now I have the tractor. This is to maintain those improvments and to finish them since as you know a logger is not a landscaper. Now comes the house. I will be moving gravel, trenching for utilities, backfilling foundation, finish grading, a million other things, and then maintenance forever. The tractor is the long term equipment for maintenance of all these improvements. Without the maintenance, the clearings would grow over with alder and other brush in short order.

The wife is not agreeing to the backhoe yet, the 6000$ tag scares us both. I can rent out a trackhoe for the trenching of utilities but I still think the long term investment in a backhoe is good since I have plenty stumps to pull and drain tiles to install over the next several years.

Nissan,

I started out last year looking for a "used" tractor. Well, i got an education real quick on the tractors that are in the 3-6K range. Everyone i looked at had "work" and "breakdown" written all over them. Like you, i needed a tractor to work, not re-furbish. Someday i would love to buy an old tractor to restore...when i have the time. I paid 15,900 for my CK30 FEL and only have 18 hrs on it, but let me just say it is a pure pleasure to operate. Do yourself a favor, wait until you can get a new tractor no matter what color it is....in the long run you will be glad you did.

I have had an old 8N for eleven years. Probably put at least $1500 into it, just parts-my labor, in that time. My wife wanted to use it but hated operating it. No power steering, stiff clutch pedal, and no loader. After getting the CK30hst last April, she loves it. The loader has turned into her wheelbarrow. Maybe take your wife with you to the dealer and let her take the tractor for a drive. As others advised with the TLB, you can save yourself money by doing work yourself. Maybe jot down some figures of the costs you'll have hiring somebody and show her the tractor would be paid for when your done building. In the end, the tractor would be free or maybe this is just a guy's way of looking at it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Victorw's advice worked for me. I took my wife to a dealer and let her take a test drive. I had to force her on the tractor but after a quick spin around the lot getting her off was just as hard. I had her drive the CK20 and then immediately hop onto the CK30...it was the best move I could have made /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif From then on she was fully behind the purchase. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

DePratt I am from Olathe, KS. I tried taking the wife to the dealer, but she refused. It doesn't help that she is six months pregnant (if you know what I mean /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif). I am very happy she is pregnant, but I think it messes with her thinking (of letting me get a toy, um a machine for working I mean). Oh well, she told me to pay the truck off and I could get a tractor. Truck will be paid off in a year and I bet she changes her mind. Then it will be the house we are building (that I could be saving $$$ by doing a lot of the work myself with a nice new CK30HST).

Bluechip - then I guess it was a good thing I had put my tshirt back on /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

boompole on ATI quick attach to FEL is an awesome tool.

Highbeam - sorry about the darkness, pic was taken less than hour before sundown. I was ready to quit and flip it next morning, but the boss wanted to see the elephant do its thing.

Nissan - Yes, definitely take your wife to dealer. Had mine do a test ride (she was reluctant). The dealer was smart - he did most of his talking to HER. Of course the payback is she remembers what he said, especially in the how to do department.

I also find that my wife gets to be the primary operator /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif for many of our tasks that need a person on the ground and tractor. I confess - I sometimes envy her seat time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
