I have a Ford 4000 industrial series backhoe loader. 1957. Just lately i noticed a loud clacking sound coming from the rear end. It started only when in reverse. Now it's forward also. Sounds terrible. Any thoughts? Dan:confused:

Rear axle fluid level OK? Does the noise change when you apply the brakes? Has it been cold/might water in the rear end fluid have frozen?

Fluids ok,no change when brakes are applied and hasn't been cold enough to freeze yet. Dan Sounds like a gear problem. Definitely not from tranny.

I have a 4cyl gas ford 4000 (early 60's) I wonder if you could inspect the ring gear by looking though the large oil fill plug hole (just behind the seat).

Pick up the rear and and tighten the wheel lug nuts and the rim to center disc bolts. Many times they will loosen up and fool people.

Do you have pie weights ? They could be loose too.

Otherwise, it's time to pull the axles and see if the bearings are shot. Then pull the trumpets and see if you broke a gear or something worse.

I'm not familiar with pie weights. Also,if I broke a gear is it fixable without separating the rear from the tranny?

You lost me at "Clacking from rear end". I can't even begin to think what that would be???

on an auto.. sure.. no question.

on a tractor.. well.. it's not as big an issue.. :)

It is just as important on a tractor as it is an auto. Both are run in together when new and the break-in is finished after installed in tractor.

Go to your local dealer and try to by one or the other. Sold only in a set.

I wonder why that would be???

I can assure you that many have replaced one or the other and not both.

just looking at the dealer catalog on a ford 650

C0NN4609K Rear Axle, Drive Pinion,

CEPN4210B Ring gear kit, with bolts and pins..

In the parts book they are seperate numbers.. sure looks like you could order them that way.

plenty of online sellers selling them individually too.

I wonder why that would be???

because in a tractor going 5mph.. it don't make much of a difference...

looking at a collection of dealers, just browsing parts lists for rear parts, i found many listing individual parts, and also found many listing paired parts... etc.

I know dozens of people who have slapped a salvage ring gear in a machine and went on trucking.. happens all the time on tractor boards dealing with older machines, where you can't run down to napa and buy a new part for a 70 year old machine.

you get what you canand go. likely get you a few DECADES or mre down the road. what more do ya want??? OP has a 57 machine...

A used ring gear is in his future, or a used or new pinion.. salvage side gears.. etc.

most of the paired parts i saw were newer non SOS series machines.. 65+ etc.

Does this only happen when changing direction or when power on to power off.

If so could be your Diff carrier.

could be lots of things he won't know till he can see inside the left trumpet hole maybee...

op says he has a Ford 4000 industrial series backhoe loader. 1957

I don't own a LD or HD industrial.. but IMHO.. much of the difference was inthe front axle.. I don't think ford offered much int he way of a diffy lock till 65... rickb or Whodat would know more.. I'm not as up on the 65+ 3 cyl models as i am on the 55-64 4 cyls..
