Funny I heard mention of an E.L.E. Just the other night I was laying in bed and watching the Discovery Channel. They were talking about E.L.E.'s and how they do so much destruction, if not total destruction.

It reminded me of my visit to the meteor crater outside Winslow, Arizona. It's hard to believe that a hole over 600' deep and half mile across was left by a "rock" only 100' in diameter. But, travelling at over 100,000 miles per hour, it made a nuclear explosion when it hit. Just imagine something the size of Vermont or Texas hitting earth. GAME OVER!

This thread has been beaten up pretty badly, but I have to add my .02 worth. I think global warming is being contributed to by our industy, vehicles (including air) and the animals. I also think it's hyped in the media.

I'm more worried about former USSR states/China/N.Korea/Iran being rogue nuclear states, than I am about my Toyota Tacoma emitting a little carbon monoxide.

Meanwhile, I'll be out disking the north 20.

80% of the world's human population lives within 50 miles of the continental coastline and will be joining Altantis underwater.....should be good if you are a mermaid though! :D

Just a thought, but if the glaciers melt and the planet is warmer, won't we have more rain? What exactly is the downside to global warming besides realestate values and new coastlines? For what we loose on the coast, we'll gain in the mountains without the glaciers. I'm just curous what is expected to happen that is so bad when the plantet is a few degrees warmer?

Eddie

The potential downsides to Global Warming (natural or manmade) are:

1. More "energy" in the ocean yields more extreme weather
2. New climate upsets traditional crops
3. Disease bearing insects - malaria, pine beetles etc. migrate to new areas
4. 60% of the world's population lives in the coastal "floodzone" - if the land based ice were to melt, they'd be underwater.
5. My snowblower doesn't get any use (see it's tractor related:rolleyes: )

There has been some discussion that we will be able to adapt to the changes. Which I do believe we can. The issue is how fast does the change come about. From what I understand, climate change is not a linear system and abrupt changes are possible (don't know how likely).

Abrupt changes??? Saw the movie with the three snowstorm blizzard twisters...Cool! :p

Coastlines flooded by global warming?

Just read a few weeks ago in Popular Science about the new Panama Canal they are going to dig, but were wondering where they were going to get the water to fill it with? DUH??

Answer: fill it with global warming freshy melted glacier ice. Any more questions? I'll be happy to answer them.

Watched a big round of climate experts about 4 years ago on the University Lecture channel. All the fear mongers gave their talks, the cute girl from Berkley was there also, doom and gloom. Then the "Yoda" of the bunch summed it all up at the end, and gave his talk, the old man. When he was done he said, " if you have the choice between global warming, and global cooling, you better pick global warming. You can't grow crops on a glacier"......;)

OK, lets say you actually believe the planet is warming up to the point the glaciers will melt and raise the level of th ocean. If you truly believed this, would you invest in land further inland? Relocate from the coastal areas? Actually do something to take advantage of this early warning that we're being given?

It kind of reminds me of Superman 1, where Lex Luther is buying up all the desert land and plans to sink the coast so his land is now waterfront.

Sometimes I wonder which is more believable. Science fiction or the UN? It sure seems like everything they had on Star Trek is turning into reality. So far the UN has been wrong on every single thing they have said or done.

Eddie, I knew there had to be a way to profit off all this! :D

I'm going to purchase a couple of square miles of mountain desert and wait for it to become ocean front property!!! :D LOL

I've read some, though far from ALL, of this thread and think this is one of those things that would be impossible for anyone to actually prove either way, especially to someone with the opposite beliefs. This morning one of my brothers sent me an e-mail with a link to this story that some of you might find interesting.
