I am a Ford guy, will not deny it. I do hate GM. Lost a job because of GM, 2 of my 4 GM vehicles were junk, lost money in the stock market when GM took the bailout, ect.

I have had good service from Ford plain and simple. Most of my friends drive Fords. Yes a few have GM stuff and some have had as good of luck as I have had with Ford.

As far as the 6.4 goes I know of no one that has had major issues. Yes, a few things here and there but nothing major. They all complain about the mpg, this is well known with a 6.4 until you pull the emissions crap and tune it then you will get 5 mpg or more better.

I have owned 3 Ford diesels. My 7.3 was great but it did seem to leak. My 2 6.0's were absolutely trouble free. My 06 F350 has 120,000 miles and not a single hiccup.

The new 6.7 seems to be the best yet. My buddy Kevin has a 2012 with 116,000 miles. It gets about 19 mpg without trying and pulls like a beast. It's been to the shop 3 times. Once for a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd. They replaced a shift solenoid. The second time he put 22 gallons of gas in it after a 16 hr shift at work. The drained it down, replaced the filters and it was ok. 2000 miles later it developed a miss. It was discovered the #3 injector was bad, probably because of gas in the system. That's it.

So other than his mistake of putting gas in a diesel it was in a bay once for a bad shift solenoid in the tranny.

Good explanation, but you don't really owe it to anyone Chris. Far too many self proclaimed "experts" on the 'net. Nice to see you usually stepping above all the BS and negative posts.
People would be better off to say, "I don't like this product because I have had x, y or z experience with it." Instead, we get posts like, "my cousin's uncle's grandfather's barber had a lot of trouble with (insert product here), so therefore it's junk and I would never buy one". Those types of posts don't really tell me a whole lot except one person's hearsay experience. Which I don't place a lot of stock in.
Looking at my signature, it doesn't take a neurosurgeon to figure out my brand. However, I choose to skip over or ignore the posts of those who are always negative toward that brand. Internet disputes are futile and nothing is accomplished or solved by them. But by the same token, I also do not post to bash brands that are not Ford, Bobcat, Harley or whatever other brands I own. Especially the ones that I have not owned personally or had any experience with.

I fully agree with you about GM. They are a lousy outfit....

I did that on my 6.0. I was fixing to fill up when a guy started talking to me and distracted me. I caught the mistake but accidentally put exactly 1 gallon of gas in the tank. I rolled the dice and added the other ~36 gallons of diesel. Truck ran fine. I made sure to fill from the 1/2 tank mark instead of fully empty, and then have emptied and filled up once more. That was 3-4 months ago. Still hoping nothing was damaged but not yet evident.

The only conclusion I can make is that you don't know many people running the 6.4 and I don't really think you should run around on TBN claiming that it was a good engine. We had one in our family that we finally got rid of due to the truck sliding off the road and getting totaled. Could not keep a radiator in it (among other problems). Had to have cab-off repairs twice. Several others I know have had major expensive problems, and even most pro-Ford guys will admit that the 6.4 is a problem child.

An update, they are going to sell the truck. They got it back from the dealer and its suppose to be running OK. The dealers mechanic drove it and put 250 miles on it. Metal in the fuel filters but changing them seemed to fix it for now.

That sucks that they are going to get stuck with it. I truly good dealer would step up to the plate and give them a good deal on a trade-in on a different one.

All I know is 5 guys with the 6.4. None have had the cab off. Maybe lucky?

DP, look at it this way, on average of all engines in light trucks and cars, what percentage of them would have major engine problems? I'd guess it would be less than 1 percent. So lets just assume the 6.4 Ford is a problem engine. What percentage of them would have major problems? Say its 5%. So you would have to know 20 people before on average one of them would have a problem. I know 1 person that owns a Ford 6.4 Powerstroke and its a problem for them, so that makes it 100% for me.

That's why you just can't go by the people you know to say its good or not good, just not enough of a test group.

Very good point. And once again Ford sells nearly twice as much diesel trucks in a year as Dodge and GM combined. This can be looked at two ways. Either they should have them perfected or the problems will seem much more frequent than other manufacturers.

The best thing Ford did is part ways in 2010 with International, the manufacturer of the 7.3, 6.0, and 6.4. My guess is in the next 10 Years Ram will part ways with Cummins and use an in house Fiat engine. This will only leave GM running an outsourced engine from Isuzu.

I don't know about Ram and Cummins parting ways soon, it probably depends on how much influence Fiat has. They have had a 25 year old relationship so far. I'm pretty much an unabashed Dodge and Ram fan but stepping outside of my biased world, Cummins brings some people on board the Ram that wouldn't otherwise consider them.
