".. Metal in the fuel filters..."

I don't much about these things, but I would assume the fuel filters are upstream from the injection system; does this thing have a low pressure fuel pump upstream from the filters? If not, then the shavings would have to originate somewhere other than the engine, correct ???

Its my understanding there is a fuel filter before and after the high pressure fuel pump.

I've never seen the truck so I have no idea, but I thought I read somewhere the second filter was after the high pressure pump. This would make sense otherwise why have two?
?

I don't know, the injector pump creates thousands of psi (at least I think so) not sure how many filters could handle that.

Yes, that's true, I think most common rails run in the 26,000 psi or more range. The only way a filter would handle that would be if its on the return line to the fuel tank.

i believe there is a filter/water separater, low pressure pump (10-15psi), smaller micron fuel filter, high pressure pump

Is there a return line after the injector pump?

Edit... I'm thinking about this wrong I guess, I'm still thinking old school diesels where there is a mechanical pump with line going to each cylinder. On the new diesels I guess there could be a return line, I don't know.

With so many horror stories including mine with diesels I wonder why any of us even buy them any more.

I don't know a lot about the Ford diesels but most modern diesels are a common rail and very high pressures. Most of the fuel being pumped is sent back to the tank. I'm not sure, but the mechanical injection om my little Kubota diesel has a return line.
