Coffee ...Wow !

I think the water makes a big difference to the taste. At the shack we have good quality filtered rainwater but it never seems to make a tasty cup of coffee. Here at home we use mains water and it always tastes better, even though our mains water has a reputation for being the worst in Australia. I think that criticism is unfair these days, as its all filtered before we get it, but its certainly much more mineralised than the rain water. 'Parts per million' of our mains water is about 300 ppm.

I'm glad I found this thread, years ago my older sister used to travel abroad every summer, as a single teacher she had the time and friends, long story short, she brought my ageing parents gifts from all over the world and one summer she brought back a huge bag of coffee from Peru, ...

:D:D:D As soon as I saw coffee and Peru I knew what was going to happen next.:laughing::laughing:

Seems like more "coffee" would do the man good? :D:D:D

I almost spewed beer reading the post.

Dan, I don't think the salt granules could sink in my coffee:laughing::D

That is why you put the salt in the coffee grounds. :p:D

I did make the coffee with egg shells this morning AND a wee, itty, bitty pinch of salt. The eggs shells did not change the taste at all.

My Sainted Mother in Law always put egg shells in her coffee grounds...I asked her why one time and she told me but I forgot...She always made great coffee though...

I've been told it helps with memory retention.

I don't recall who told me that, though.

(There's never a sarcasm font around when you need it. :D)

My wife bought a grind and brew coffee maker about a month ago. She buys our coffee on the web at Coffee Am. She has found that it's cheaper per pound than star bucks at wally world. We don't like dark roast either. Our favorite is tanzania peaberry. In a medium roast.

How in the heck did he get coco leave tea into the US? Oh, wait, I do not want to know. :D I THINK coco leaves are illegal in the US.

That is funny though, well not for him it was not.

You buy coca tea in every grocery store in Peru. The problem is the high sensitivity of the test. It will pick up traces of cocain in your system two weeks after last use. So I was told.

Duh, that makes sense:laughing: I didn't even think of it that way, I was assuming adding it like some one adds sugar to it.

And the salt made it sweeter!:D:D:laughing:

Duh! NO! :D It is the SUGAR I put into the grounds that made the coffee sweeter! Yesterdays coffee grounds had salt, sugar, egg shell, oh yeah, coffee. :D

The salt does somehow mellow out the coffee. I don't understand the chemistry but it does work. If I took a minute or two I could count the number of salt grains in the coffee. It does not take much.

Dan....Did you use large or small egg shells ? Were they brown , white or some other color ? My Mother in Law always used fresh egg shells from our own Chickens...Did you crush them up or just put in big pieces of the shell ?

Just big pieces of shell from white Egg Land Best eggs. I guess if the eggs where from free range chickens the coffee would have tasted better. :D:laughing:

The shells did settle into the grounds. :) So I could see the egg shells keeping the coffee grounds at the bottom of the pot that was on the burner.

You were teasing? Ah, now you tell me! I have been crying in my beer all afternoon. :D:laughing::D:laughing: :drink:
The egg shells did not make a difference in my coffee but figure I would give it a try. I heard about the salt a year or so ago and tried it. The salt did make a difference so I keep a little bowl of Kosher salt next to the coffee maker. :D

If the eggs worked, I am not sure what I would have done. Keeping broken chicken eggs sounds a bit weird to me.
