Cold!!!--Time to go fishing

There is something good about every place. I've been to the UP. It would be a hoot to ice fish up there sometime. If you get a chance, look at a Feb Field & Stream....there is a great shot of about 50 guys lined up drilling holes in the ice. Seems they drill about 22000 holes for the annual Brainard Mn Jaycees ice fishing extravaganza. They did say the ice was 26 inches and 22000 holes were over 250 acres. That many holes in one spot would make me nervous. Every once in awhile, some people from northern indiana will even venture down our way when the ice is good. I always learn a lot from these guys. We use mostly bee moths here...but I notice that guys up north use spikes a lot. When I was a teenager, my dad was always growing his own ice bait. I think it drove my mom crazy. He liked golden grubs. We sometimes get our hands on mousies and spikes , but hardly anyone around here keeps them in the bait shops. I have a bro-in-law and nephew who are insane about ice fishing, and it's always great to spend a few weekends on the ice with those guys.

Made it out this afternoon for a while. First lake I went to had only 2 inches of ice which cracked beneath my 200+ pounds. There was a family ice skating about 100 yards down. They said it was 4" thick over there. I cut a hole and it was only 2 inches where I was. I said no thanks and moved on to another lake. It was an honest 3.5 to 4 inches of hard ice. Clear and creepy(see attached).

I think they call that a grass bass! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

To keep it on a tractor level, on the way home I saw this monster. Must be the world's largest brush hog. It says it is a Kershaw Klearway 800. It is articulated behind the cab. Meaty tires. There is lots of logging going on in the area.

Update--well we made it up there Saturday morning. Due to shifting ice and lack of snow there were no bridges out so we had to fish in the bay. Twenty inches of solid ice, but we really need the bridges to get out to the good spots.

My batteries on the digital were dead so I'm waiting for my nephew to email his. Otherwise I will post some from next weekend.

Also keeping this conversation related to tractors. I used my 4010 to lift the fish house in order to spray the under side with bedliner. I put the bucket under the tongue and lifted until the house was resting on the back bumper. When the bucket hit about 4 feet, the limits of the system were realized. I know there are a lot of variables to deal with, but anyone have a guess as to what that house weighs?

Hmmm.......

Allowing for all of those variables, I'd say........A BUNCH!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks Garry,

A bunch--that's the same amount of distance Brett Favre put on the last pass he threw--sorry I couldn't resist /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually--I would have liked to see Green Bay pull that one out. It was a great game to watch.

Yeah, well, at least up until about the last minute. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I don't mind losing, really, I don't. As long as it's a good game and it's lost because we got beat by a better team.

BUT NOT BECAUSE WE GAVE IT AWAY!!!!!

Ahem. There - I feel better now. Sorry, I just had to blow a little.

I really put most of the loss on Sherman's shoulders for his two 4th and 1 decisions. I'm tempted to send him an e-mail and remind him what Vince said about points in a game..."You NEVER give away points."

But then to let the Eagles make a 1st down on 4th and 26????? ARRRGGGHHHH!

O.K. I'm in control again.

Yes Bob, it was a good game. And I even found a silver lining in it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

By not going on to the Super Bowl, and of course, winning it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif, we're assured that Favre will be back next year! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well Boys,

Just heard from my brother. The resort has moved the bridges in place over the ice cracks and the big perch are biting. We're heading out tomorrow afternoon.

I'll put good batteries in the digital and snap a few pics.
