While I don't go out of my way to kill snakes like some -- they have a purpose and keep rodents in check around here -- water moccasins are mean aggressive SOBs and will go on the offensive with little provocation. It's possible to piss one off without even knowing, and then it's out to get you, no joke.

Around here, my biggest challenge is being able to identify normal water snakes from water moccasins. I wouldn't kill either if I can help it, but I would watch the moccasin with full attention while it's nearby, whereas the others are no threat.

While I agree, many snakes serve a purpose and do not deserve to die, you sir have never encountered a water moccasin. Those SOB's need killing and that is all there is to it.

You sir, have never sat next to a hospital bed with a five year old niece screaming in pain because her leg was turning black and swollen up nearly as large as her upper body. Same niece had to have her hip replaced at 23 due to complications from that same bite of a 12" long copperhead. If in the wild I pretty much leave snakes alone. If in an area where there are people and if I'm not sure of their being poisonous or not, they are killed.

I once killed a snake out of hysteria. It slid down my leg out of a tarp. It was black with yellow markings. I chopped first then ask questions. I then looked it up and found out it was a king snake. I'm very sorry I killed it and did a very brief study of snakes. Now if I see a black snake I either watch it from a distance or after I land back on the ground I walk away from it. I know there are some non poison snakes that can be confused with a copper head. But if I have to get down and see what their eyes look like. Their dead. Usually they are killed in a gardening accident. Water moccasins they die in swimming accidents

And you next question will be: "well what is the difference between chopping down the .410 single shot shotgun and this Comanche thingy?"..The difference is the Comanche has a rifled barrel, that makes the shot column spin, but then has a "thingy" on the end to catch the wad and stop the spin. You see gun laws are INSANE. All of them.They are written by people that are insane, and imposed on us. There is no rhyme or reason to the "Why" you cannot cut down a simple shotgun you already own, but when you take the hacksaw to it... Watch out. Big brother is gonna get you. You see gun laws are not logical, they are emotional. The concept of passing a law banning a "thing" like a gun is INSANE. It will never work, never has, never will. Back in the day when this law was passed, it was common for "crooks" to cut down shotguns to conceal under their coats and use them for nefarious purposes. Well passing a law sure stopped them HUH? But now a pistol you can conceal is OK. yep.. makes so much sense doesn't it. Any shotgun found in your possession with a barrel less than 18 inches or any rifle in your possession with a barrel less than 16 inches will send you up the river.


Oh, now your next question is "oh now wait a minute, you said any rifle with a barrel of less than 16 inches.. well the rifled barrel of the Comanche is only 10 inches. whats with that?".. Yes but you were not paying attention, I said a rifle less than 16 inches, you see the Comanche is a pistol, so it can have a shorter barrel.. see? Like I said, gun laws are INSANE!

Back in the late 50's or early 60's, a customer brought in a .410 pistol to our family hardware store looking for 2.5 inch shells for it. (Dad knew the guy) I remember it being a break action but could be wrong. Later Dad told me it was an illegal gun. It must have predated that 1930's law someone on here mentioned.

Sounds like a Marbles Game Getter.. Very common combo Pistol from long ago.

I have a single shot break action 410/45 pistol with ten inch barrel. Thompson Contender. The barrel is rifled and has a compensator that is screwed into the end when you shoot 410. I think I'd have better luck using it as a 45 if something were much beyond 20 feet away.
