Well I have made up my mind to purchase a Super Comanche. I looked around at three local gun shops today and they ranged in price from $239 down to a guy that will order me one for $185. At one shop one of the clerks, a nice older gentleman, said he had one of the pistols. Said he didn't really want it but bought it for some reason. Now it is his go to, everyday, in the yard, carry gun. Has a piece of property bordered by a small creek and has dispatched several copperheads, a few water moccasins, a few squirrels, and a couple other things. Said when you missed a cottonmouth on the first shot you learned to reload VERY quickly. Also said to forget the 3" shells as being unpleasant to shoot. Get the lowest powered 2.5" #9 shot for anything up to 20' and carry a couple #4 shot for anything over that. Over 40' to 50' he said to forget it. Don't know if he meant the short barrel caused the velocity of shot to fall off too quick or if the shot spread too much. Or maybe the short sight picture made it impossible to hit something at that range. He said he could kill a rat at 20' with the SC that he couldn't get near with a 22 pistol or a 9mm or 38. According to him the #9 shot would give about a 6" pattern at 30' with a few shot outside that.
Anyway, I am looking for a pistol for specific purposes.
1) To carry in a crossdraw holster to enable firing from a tractor, ATV, or other open vehicle. A vehicle mounted weapon would not work when dismounting in swampy ground to move things around. Want it on my belt at all times.
2) Primary target will be snakes, rats, or undesirable birds in an open field.
3) Secondary target will be birds inside a stables or shed using the very small #12 shot.
4) Third target will be undesired birds around a bird feeder in a neighborhood and squirrels in areas my longer ranged 16-guage would not be appropriate. (My single shot 16-ga is much preferred over my 12-ga pump as a squirrel killer. With a long barrel and #4 shot it really reaches out to touch them.)
The SC will fill the bill in a cheap fashion and as I am a firm believer in the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) I think it will fulfill my intended uses better than any of the fancier, more expensive weapons.
Beside, if I loose it in the middle of a field I've only lost $185, not $400+.
