I have an old Compaq computer I want to add more memory. I am not sure how the memory cards should be added. The info I have on the computer it has 96 MB of standard memory and has 3 expansion slots. Max memory is 384. So here is my question.

Do I buy 3-128 MB, one for each slot, or one 256 mb and leave the existing 96 mb in place.

Is the memory that you are looking at compatible with your computor? If you are looking local, it might not be. I would check a online source such as Kingston. Just picked up 2 512k's for $89 each and free shipping. It would be cheaper to go with one memory rather than the multiples. The pc must be old if the memory is set up in multiples of 96.

I went to the Kingston site for my computer a Compaq Presario 5451 it lists only 64 mb and 128 mb but not 256 mb. Does this mean I need to buy 2- 128 and not one 256mb? Kinston says I need a PC133 SDRAM DIMM. Ebay has Kingston 256 mb for about $45. Any suggestions???

I checked Crucial's site for you computer model and they only have the 64MB and 128MB chocies, too. I would recommend Crucial for memory. I used them before and am satisfied. I am using a 128MB chip from them right now. Maybe they don't list the 256MB chips because your computer can only handle three 128 chips. Putting in three 256 chips (or two, even) would probably screw the thing up.

Here is their site for your model computer:

MB's, K's, does it not all get confusing? Had to reread my post several times to see where I messed up. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

On my first PC, upgraded from 64k to 128k or something like that and it cost more to do than the two 512MB's combined.

As RAM becomes out dated it becomes more expensive as it is no longer in mass production. I'd buy it off of e-bay to avaoid spending too much money on an ever aging computer. If the Kingston/Crucial sites say only 64 or 128's don't buy anything different as you'll waste your money the computer would probably operate with a 256 stick but only see it as a 128 hence a waste of 128 per stick.

Kevin

I'll throw my vote for crucial also. They know a lot about everybodies computers and can make the right recomendations. I have used them before on older computers and never have I had the wrong memory.

I'd see if you can download a manual for your computer.. most manuals list a memory map and show what your memory controller can handle, in what order / slot and in what combinations.
