Those interested in the Florida statutes, which were mentioned above, may click here, an official Florida site. Especially interesting is to click on the link for Lawful Self Defense in the box on the right.

Please draw your own conclusions. I have opinions, but like Murph, I'm not going there on TBN.

I have the paperwork for a Florida non-resident permit coming in the mail. Missouri has passed a concealed carry law, but it's held up in court due to an injunction.

If MO courts lift the injunction, the Florida permit will be valid here. If not, I'll still be good in many states.

If you're interested in the various states laws, check out www.packing.org

Here in NY this is one of the hardest states to get a carry permit. Takes about 6-8 months and many background checks both state and FBI. Plus the cost is way up there now. I have had mine for about 18 years, and I do carry a gun sometimes. In fact just last Sun. at 2:15 a.m. I had someone banging on my front door, thought they were going to knock it in! So I answered the door with my 9mm. in my hand! Turned out to be two of the local cops stating that they got a 911 call from my house. The phone had be dead all that day and somehow the lines got crossed. The cops asked me to put the gun down before I opened the door and were sorry for waking me! They never even asked to see my permit, must be because of my sleepy bewildered look and the flannel boxers I had on! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I think if all states were as tough as NY is for getting a permit, I see no problem with people having guns under there coat. Its a privilege to carry not a right. So if you are dumb or a screw-up you don't even get the privilege or you lose it pretty fast.

I'm from Ohio and have been casually following the concealed carry debate for years. I'm surprised that the governor finally decided to sign a CC bill. Personally I have no real desire to carry a gun but always thought that I would look into getting a permit if Ohio ever passed a law. Being a law abiding citizen and knowing that it's my responsibility to know the law, I've been doing a little research into Ohio's new CC law. I haven't read the entire bill yet but from what I have read, it's going to be too much of a pain for a law abiding citizen to comply with the law's requirements. The list of where you CAN'T carry is large. No goverment owned or leased buildings. No schools or school-like places. No places where liquor is being dispensed. Plus don't be surprised if the officer who just pulled you over for speeding has hos weapon unholstered as he approaches your car.

And the whole area of how to legally carry while in a car seems very confused right now.

I have no issue with Ohio's new law but for me I may just hold off on getting a permit for now and see how it goes for others in the state.

Von,
Does New York State require a permit to own a a handgun, or just to carry it?

Here, in Indiana, you can own a handgun without a permit and carry it on your property or if you are the proprietor of a business you can carry it at your company(there's some other stipulations, but I'm not to up on them). You can get three types of permits to carry them here(last I checked).

1. Target practice: a permit to transport between home and the range.
2. Work related: a permit to carry a weapon when on business that requires it(security guard, courier, etc...) to keep your job.
3. Personal protection.

Just curious.

Now I know why Montana has always been my favorite state!

Carrying without a Permit/License
Date updated: Tuesday, December 9, 2003

Open carry generally legal in Montana, but not common and socially awkward in populated areas. Cities may prohibit the carrying of concealed or unconcealed firearms into publicly-owned buildings, parks or schools. Be aware that most MT cities have enacted such an ordinance banning open carry in these places. State law prohibits taking firearms into school buildings. No state law prohibits private property owners from banning firearms in their establishments, although few do. Generally workplace restrictions are for employees only, e.g., hospitals etc.

MossRoad,
When I got my permit NY had two kinds, one was to carry and the other was a premises, which was for your property only. You need to have one of these permits to own a handgun in NY. Now I don't know many people that have one just for their property, so my guess is that most are to carry. They are pretty strict on the gun laws here. If caught with a hand gun and no permit its 5 years in jail!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Idaho is about the same. The only time a CW permit is needed is if you keep a firearm in you glovebox or under the seat.

I don't do that but I carry a gun alot in the car if I am in the hills.

Common sence tells me not loaded and in view in a vehicle.

I've had a CCW for about 10 years or so now. I carry most of the time, other when I'm at work.

There has been very few instances of CCW holders using their gun in situatiuons that don't warrant it. It's not just enough to do the paperwork, take the (required) coursework and buy a gun. The decision to carry should be taken very seriously.
Even in clearcut cases of self defense (I've been in one...gun wasn't used, but I had it ready), if you use that weapon your life is going to be interesting until things are cleared up.

In PA, one must run or try to evade use of the gun as much as humanly possible. You've got to try to retreat (except in your home). If you pull it out, you'd better be ready to use it! And, there's no such thing as "shoot to wound".
If some thug wants my money..no problem...he might get $40 or $50. If it goes beyond that, I'm going to defend myself. But I know...if I use a weapon in self defense, I'm likely going to be charged with something...up to and including murder. My life will change dramatically..at least for a time...but I will still have my life!

I always recomend citizens get their permit...if they are willing to put the time and energy in to learning how to use that gun.

"And I might be a bit uneasy sitting in a bar if the guy next to me slapping down beers was carrying."

By the way, most states prohibit carrying in a place that sells alcohol for consumption on the premises. And, in PA, CCW means concealed. You do not want to be "flashing" that gun... good way to lose your permit.

BTW, I don't strap on a Glock when operating the tractor, but I do have my .38 in my pocket with 3 rounds of snake shot and 2 rounds of hardball.
