Considering a X750

I don't think he will unless he finds a buyer for my JD345. They don't have a JDX750 in inventory so it's "no skin off his back" to miss the sale. They have bigger fish to fry than wasting time on the smallest diesel tractor ($$) JD makes.

Is that what is meant by an "Independent Dealer"? :D

Seriously, you are looking at it with a right attitude. If it is something as you say "nice to have" but not necessarily needed at this time, you, the buyer, can remain in the driver's seat.

I find even if you want something, you have to go in with the attitude that you don't.

If the salesman knows your drooling over a certain machine, he also knows you will do just about anything to make sure it becomes yours, including paying too much.

When I went shopping for my X740 in February, I knew 100% I wanted it, but I didn't act like it. I went into the dealership with the attitude of "if this works out, great. If not, I will find another deal elsewhere" I had no intentions of signing the papers that day. I managed to land a great deal with a lot of freebies thrown in, and I do believe that was partly because I didn't care whether it went well or not, and I honestly didn't.

You do have to be careful though. Some salesman definitely have their nose in the air, or don't care about small value sales. Some salesman will sense that you don't care, or your acting like you don't care, and they will simply say no to any demands you make. If the salesman does not care to make the sale, pretty much anything you do will not help you, unfortunately, he is the one who sets what you will ultimately pay. If you sense the salesman does not care about you, the sale, or sales that don't carry price tags over $100,000, I would find a different salesman. If you can't find one where your at, move on to the next dealership, your bound to find a good one sooner or later.

I am retired after several years of experience from working for the old International Harvester Co as a district sales manager and 23 years as a salesman and as a sales manager at large independent full line I-H dealer; however, I didn't work with Ag equipment. I know how it works and don't deal with salesmen. I deal with either the dealer principal or the store manager and they are aware of my past experience. I am friends with the JD store manager and he is a nice guy and has spent a lot of time trying to put together a deal and I appreciate his time and effort. If I buy a JD product, I will buy from this large multi-store dealership since I've known the dealer principals since they opened their first store some 30 years ago.

The store manager probably did me a favor and I will keep my $$. I have moved on...

Bill, you probably are doing the right thing. You know that 345 and all/any quirks it might have. It's like an old comfortable pair of shoes. Buying new is always painful. If you ever change your mind, putting it for sale on craigslist might bring you some buyers at your asking price so you don't have to negotiate with the dealer. You either have to hassle with the public or haggle with the dealer. No deal is free from negotiation. Some people thrive on that and others hate it. I think I'm more of the latter type.:)

Yep, I agree. I don't want the hassle of messing with the public by placing an ad on craigslist and not knowing the character of the people coming on to my property to supposedly look at my tractor. The store manager has offered to place my JD 345 on his show room floor with a price tag on it to see if it draws any action. If I change my mind, (a couple of more trips to town to buy gasoline might change it), I may take him up on his offer.
