Grading Considering an upgrade

   / Considering an upgrade #21
One of my partime gigs is clearing mesquite with a large frame skid loader and a sheepsfoot grubber. A few years ago I grubbed 34 acres of small to medium sized mesquite for a customer. Then I built a rake for the skid (similar to a rake you would see on a dozer but smaller, about 3" between tines) and raked the mesquites into windrows then into piles for later burning. I charged the guy $8000 to do this work. As I remember, It took me about 30 days to do the work.

There is a rather long thread that I started describing this project from beginning to end. It is in the owning/operating forum under What price for grubbing mesquite?

I would be very careful about grubbing with a front end loader on a tractor. It would be easy to spring the loader arms. On a skid loader the arms are down against solid stops when I engage the tree. Also the arms on the skid are much more robust than on the typical farm tractor FEL.
