Recently acquired a 22 acre farm that has not been farmed for three years. My intention is to take the front pasture (4 acres) and turn it into part of the yard.

I have already removed the fence/posts and brush hogged it over the last two weeks.

My questions are:

What is the best way to remove that much clippings.

I cut it down to about 6 inches with the hog, do I need to cut it again with the hog before I start finish mowing?

Finally should I do any kinds of fertilizing/weed and feed/or liming of the area before winter sets in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just keep hogging it for a while, the grass will come. If its pretty level, You might just get away with cutting and overseeding next spring.

Get a soil test and lime now if needed. I would cut with the hog this year and start with the finish mower in the spring as things start to green up.

I agree with Varm't If there is some grass their.. mow the heck out of it.. and it will keep grassing up.

my 10 ac pasture project was an old watermellon patch from years ago.. turned to ragweed, dog fennel, and bramble/blackberry. ( I did disc it to get rid of some of the stuff.. but so far.. mowing is making the most of it. )
