Not even close...if it is not N.E. GA "silver queen"...you can call Vidalia onions from ones you buy in GA and call them "Vidalia Onions"...but like the Silver Queen corn it won't even be close to the real thing...Doh!

I love pissing matches from people that live in N.E. GA!

Where is that anyway? I hear they enjoy sweet corn "down there", just as we enjoy sweet corn here. Where ever "here" might be.

Doh!

WHAT! No butter? Nah!

Agreed. People say all the time that our sweet corn doesn't "need" butter. Who said anything about need? Shut up and butter the damned thing.

Also, this oven method is intriguing, but if you really want the freshest sweet corn, there's only one way to do it: bring your pot of water to a boil, carry the pot into the field and set it next to a corn stalk. Shuck an ear of corn without picking it, and bend the stalk over dipping the corn into the pot. :)

I've never done it, but they were talking about it on Wisconsin public radio. Be worth a try, if just for the photo op.

While a pain, and need a big bon fire.....the absolute BEST way to cook corn is directly in the coals.

After a well established fire......reach in with a long shovel that has a metal pipe for a handle (wood handle far too short and done burnt off).

Get a "bed" of coals large enough to cook however many ears you want. Bed to be ~3-4" thick of nice glowing embers.

Lay cord on, cover with another 3-4" of embers.

Wait 10 min or so (cook time will vary based on temp of coals, which will vary based on species and moisture content of wood).

THAT is the best corn ever. Also a great way to do spuds. But coat them with butter and wrap in foil first.

Second best is on the CHARCOAL grill. NOT the city-slicker propane stuff.

And neither of these methods have we ever soaked in water. Fresher picked corn has all the water it needs to cook.

Oh, and I like butter. Nothing to do with need. I just like butter:thumbsup:

Ever tried REALLY fresh corn? Try it sometime - just twist an ear off the stalk, shuck it, and eat it right there! I LOVE it like that. I have a hunch that more than one ear eaten this way might produce the same results as too many barely-ripe green apples.

And there is nothing more delicious than a stalk of asparagus that you JUST broke off moments ago.

gives me the runs. ;-) Done it more than once, I'm either a slow learner (see above post #23 for references) OR Yes, the corn is that good! ;-)
