Doesn't seem right, does it? :confused3:
I think the variable is genetics. My Grandpa was a lifelong smoker and drinker. Lost a lung in WWII, kept on smoking and lived to be 85. Go figure.

Be tough dip snuff.

That's one thing I only tried a couple times and said "Blech!"

I preferred Redman for a while. Every few years I'll buy a pouch, chew for an hour or two, then toss it.

Same thing with cigars. We used to smoke em when we went fishing once or twice a year. Haven't done that for at least 25 years.

All well and good until you expectorate out the window at 60 mph and the 'goo' coats the side of your vehicle......

Not my idea of a good time...

One constant theme is caution for those 60 and older...

SF has said those 60 and older should take special precautions???

Oakland will receive the cruise ship Grand Princess that has been offshore circling the last few days...

I cannot recall the last time a cruise ship has docked in Oakland... the terminal is a freight terminal and set up for containers.

On a separate note... one side of the family seems to have excellent genes and the other not quite as robust.

My Dairy Farmer Grandfather had never been to the Doctor once in his life until in his late 80's when he lost 3 fingers in a farm accident in the woods and was rushed to the ER...

Mom and all of her 9 brothers and sisters all delivered at home... some with midwife most by Grandpa...

He drank raw cow milk daily... relished fat and would even ladle it on for Sunday supper... early to bed and early to rise 7 days a week... only time he ever travel more than 50 miles from the farm was his trip to California back in 1967... said that one trip gave him a lifetime of memories.

Maybe being rural and somewhat self contained with their own staples cut down on the disease factor which is totally unlike modern living where everyone goes everywhere...

This will be the 3rd time quiting. Its astronomical how hard it is....

Curious, how long does one not smoke before you consider it quiting? I'd think quiting is quiting done.

I didn't smoke. I quit chewing. 3 times. It happens and we move on....

I think the variable is that he was always active. I know that I felt like crap all day yesterday, but the dog wanted to go for a walk so we went about 1/2 mile. I felt so much better afterward that we walked another half mile.

Active and somewhat the master of his destiny...

No phone until 25 years ago... but the radio was always a staple after supper with the crop report/weather.

I will always treasure the time I was able to spend with them as it was a glimpse at a world that no longer exists... yet the lifestyle was very healthy and simple but not lacking... the home was always nice and warm... radiant heating from a wood fired boiler in the workshop... grandma baking on her Wedgewood stove also using wood all winter and the electric side in summer...

At least it showed a way of life devoid of tech... spring water, spring house, make your own cheese, bread, preserves... and raise your own meat and very devout... in some ways similar to Mennonites...

At work we receive at least daily updates on the virus and the lobby signage keeps changing... seems just about every day I am laminating a new poster or advisory to replace one I had just put up...

The Imaging Unit is separate but shares lobby space... they have a new advisory to please advise if you have traveled in anyone of the following countries...

I kid you not the list INCLUDES THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in addition to about 40 other countries.

Being that we are in California I cannot imagine anyone that would be excluded.

One thing that the public may not comprehend is just who will staff the hospitals if all the employees are sent home to self quarantine as has already happened in a nearby sister facility where an entire unit was sent home...

CDC is not reporting national coronavirus statistics, they say they can't do it, because testing is done at state level.
I am sure it is complicated.
But they publish a weekly influenza report, with data from clinical labs nationwide.

In the absence of CDC reporting, there is one source I found that is assembling coronavirus information from all the states. They also show where they get the data (state public health agencies mainly). It is frequently updated.

Agreed ur, sometimes, old-ways are the best.

To that point, from Wikipedia....

"The word quarantine comes from a seventeenth-century Venetian variant of the Italian quaranta giorni, meaning forty days, the period that all ships were required to be isolated before passengers and crew could go ashore during the Black Death plague epidemic."

Despite (sometimes because of) our modern tech , we are still vulnerable...... news today affects 1/4 of Italy's population....

Yep... I was planning a long awaited trip this Spring to visit all the family on Mom's side... it has been her wish for a long time.

Thought about Christmas but was over ruled over concerns of ice and snow... lots of that in the mountains... the consensus was wait for Spring.

Looks like it isn't going to happen now... even if we were able to go... I'm sure the thought of travelers from California would be hard to overcome due to Corona...

When this first made news my thoughts were just how much life as we know it would be affected. Fear is motivational and much of what is done travel wise or even import/export is desire opposed to necessity.

Italy has taken far reaching steps... and just about all of Europe is no more than a day's drive away when you look at it and the EU has made travel seamless like it has never been within much of Europe.
