Report from FORTRESS TASMANIA (Wed. 8th Apr @ 1207): All's well, although we've had another death in the State which brings us up to 3. All 3 were elderly folks who had returned from the cruise ship RUBY PRINCESS. I believe that the Australian death count has just reached 50. There're no 'cases' in the Shire and I haven't been 'called up' as a Reservist to assist the local constabulary.

Just returned from my weekly trip into St Helens for mail & groceries. Everyone still has a smile on their face, Petrol is sloooooowly coming down in price but, living on an island, we've always paid more than on the mainland. We're not having to queue to get into the supermarket, just practice 'distancing' = at least we're being treated as adults. Very few shortages that I could see, plenty of TP and I got everything on my weekly shopping list.

Local 'handyman' came out to the property, "Wagtail Park", to perform a chimney sweep (I'm not allowed to go onto my roof due to a buggered up knee) and also fixed some holes in the roof that I didn't know about. (so that's where that rainwater was coming from!)

Stay safe out there mate. You guys are doing good. We have 7 in the county infected and 1 death. I was reported that the 1 guy that died (70 year old with lots of issues) maybe infected 50 to 100 people. We don't know of course. He was checked in to the hospital for other issues and someone decided to test him for Covid-19. Whoops. he had it and they found that out after he had died. Apparently Covid-19 procedures were not followed. Or so the news reports said. I don't know if that is true or not.

I had a spot on our living room ceiling that would turn yellowish every few years. It was too close to the wall for me to get to it from the attic. So, I'd just scrape it and paint it. When we went to sell the house, I decided to put a new roof on it. I found a .38 bullet hole in the roof right over that spot!

Gotta wonder how that got there..

Not in South Bend, you don't.

There was the .38 in the roof, a .22 in the wall, and a .22 in the garage wall.

I worked for 30 years at the local newspaper downtown. In the end of our press building there were large windows. There were 8 bullet holes. 7 were innies. 1 was an outie!

In spring, when the snow melts, you can usually find 9mm jacketed slugs in the gravel where the snowplow pushed them in the parking lots all winter. We had half a coffee cup of them.

Where I am now, when I took my pool cover off one spring a few years ago, I saw a black spot on the bottom of the pool. It was a 9mm slug that had come straight down through the winter cover. The salt water had turned the copper black and left a 1" circular stain.

Just tonight we can hear gunfire over in South Bend.

There's so much gunfire there, the city installed a shot spotter microphone system. It alerts the police within milliseconds of detecting gunfire and pinpoints the location through triangulation to within just a couple feet. Really accurate. While the shooters are rarely caught fast, at least the shooting victims are located quickly and have a better chance of survival.

Cops are usually on the scene of a shooting within a minute or two in South Bend due to that system.
