To me, most granite looks like different shades of Vomit!

My current house had vomit countertops when we moved in. We would have picked a different color but we like the ones we have. We use cutting boards, paper towels, marble tiles for hot things etc. the same as we did when we had Formica in the last house. The vomit countertops are always clean, look new and appear to be holding up well. They are solid and can be used to defrost meats quickly. Everything you want in a vomit top.

I am sure quartz are good as well. No one said anything about concrete that I saw.

Heres an idea, something I have found very useful.

One can is for garbage, the other for recycling.

I had to remove the hinges and move the pull. I don't think they cost this much at the big box stores.

We put in granite and have been happy with it. There is a HUGE variety of patterns in color available so looking at the slabs at the supplier is important. If they don't have a large variety look elsewhere. The company we used had at least 100 different slabs and they were a small company in a rural area. Some of the slabs where Oh So Ugly. One looked liked it was "designed" by an artist on an acid trip. There were big blobs of bright, 60's colors in the granite. Ugly as heck but amazing that rock could look that way.

We got a slab that is multi colored and on the lighter side. Not dark. We did get a slab of black granite for the wood stove hearth. Non have stained. We have had some water marks that somehow got into the granite but it evaporated quickly.

A big reason we went with granite was so we can put down hot pans and cooking sheets on the counter. You can't do that with many of the counter top materials. We looked at the man made stone products but just did not like what we saw. Granite was just better looking material.

The only problem we have had is that the granite has split on the thin piece of granite between the kitchen sink and wall. Don't know if it is caused by water and/or soap getting in the granite or if the slab was glued to the cabinet and wall and one or the other moved. :confused3: Figured we could get the company to fill the crack but have not bothered.

For cabinets I would look at Ikea if they are nearby. Their cabinets look to be good quality with lots of options and cost less then what we had installed.

Built a new house in 1996 and didn't install granite countertops because we heard that they weren't permitted in commercial kitchens due to the difficulty of keeping porous materials disinfected. Couldn't find Corian in a suitable colour so used laminate. When selling eight years later, got lots of comments about lack of granite countertops. Quartz wasn't readily available, but that's what I think we'd use today. Resale has to be a big consideration as that house is worth about 2.5 to $3,000,000.00 today.

Every now and then I get a job from a realtor to prep a house for sale. Some of the things they do is obvious. Neutral paint that is the same in every room unless there is already a neutral color there. Cover wallpaper with a trowel texture. Paint cabinets and install granite counters. Then a new tile back splash and faucet. Fix what's broken, and clean it so the most picky person will feel comfortable walking around the house naked. Usually it's between $10 to $20 grand depending on the house to get it ready. Every house sells the first week on the market after it's all done. They either get the money back they put into it, or sell so quickly that it's worthwhile, or a combination of the two. Usually the house has already been on the market for a long time and the owners are relisting with another agent that is more aggressive with what it will take to sell the place and get top money. Some realtors just agree with what the clients say regardless of reality. Others will tell the home owner that their house needs work, and honestly list what needs to be done. Granite sells!!!!

Hmmm, we have some well worn Formica countertops and some laminate sections. Any tricks to it? I assume that you glue it down to what's there and then trim the edges to match?
