Don, I stopped the local BB here in McAllen. They had all the stuff we were talking about on the shelf. Priced a lot higher than what I spent on EBAY, but they did have them. The one we stopped at last week must be a small store.

Yagi would be a good way to go but how do you find out where the tower is so you can point it correctly? I used the test function on my iphone to try to find the direction to point this little wilson antenna by walking around the building and checking signal strength as I did.

Well I drove by one. So I pointed at it. :) Plus IIRC Verizon had a program that gave you signal strength. I know Spint has the bars, but the numbers are what is important. Just pointing towards the general area, I can see the numbers go up and down.

I believe I also googled for a cell phone tower map. That gave me an idea what carriers were associated with what tower. I might have found that link from DSL ? Cable ? VOIP ? Security ? Satellite ? Fiber ? News ? Tips ? Reviews ? Community ? Tools - dslreports.com.

I don't recall, I can dig it up later tonight, if you can't find it, or another noter may post it.

I have the same thing, verizon MIFI. It includes router for up to 5 wireless connections. Using it right now, I just keep it plugged into ac, but you can use it on battery also. I got it for travel.

Thanks farmer, I was re-reading through the post for more info.

I wasn't able to get the Sprint mifi, they send me another usb and the signal strength is non existent. My wife's on call work phone is through verizon and here at the house she gets great service, where on sprint I am on roam. So I am considering the verizon mifi service since they are the best coverage here. ( according to the coverage maps)

How to you like dealing with verizon?? I guess i would need to get an wifi pci card for my desk top too right?

I don't like dealing with verizon, but some of the areas I want to use the MIFI, verizon is the only service so I sucked it up and went with them. For the MIFI, they are the same cost as Sprint. Today is one month on my MIFI, I used 4 GB out of 5 GB on my plan, But I still am using my other internet for other computers, so not sure if 5 GB month will meet my needs for home use. Read back thru these posts about the cradlepoint router and using a USB wifi card with one. The MIFI is supposed to work with the cradlepoint router also. Or, you use the MIFI with it's own internal 5 user router. You would need a wireless network card in the PC and use the MIFI. I got the MIFI for $.01 right before christmas from Amazon.com, with no activation fee. Just had to do a 2 yr commitment with verizon. It's great for travel, used it today in my car with an Ipod touch to keep track of football scores while on the road. Also used it to do computer work while my son was at a meeting. Normally I sit and wait and am non productive, today I was surfin Net and being unproductive :D

I have 3 pay plan options to choose from. I have the highest at $79.95 but if a wireless card setup is $60 a month....I see no real need to switch right now. I'm in hopes that DSL will eventually make it's way to my house sooner than later.

The taxes on the Verizon card here in Ohio (maybe everywhere) put it closer to $80.

We have been using closer to 1 GB on ours, mostly home use since May 2009. The most we have used is around 2 GB. 2 adults and a 5th grader.

We get about 2 bars on the display with a verizon antenna. Verizon got us for a $20 adapter and $20 for the antenna. Does not work without at our rural location without the antenna.

Thanks for the reply's on Verizon. Since they have the strongest signal strength, I will have to go with them. Now I just need to figure out the cheapest way (mifi or usb) to have the net on my desktop and my daughters Mac, that's why I was interested in the 5-way mifi but, that's not set in stone yet.

My wife gets a Verizon discout anywhere from 13%-18%, so that should help on the monthly. Right now the dial up is costing around $50 with phone and netzero sooo...
