Very good idea!!!
I know it cooks the same, as I cook ribeyes for 6 minutes on each side, the minutes are exactly the same,,
the steaks get done the same amount (medium rare) the only thing different is that I save 2/3 of the charcoal.
The only negative is that you CAN NOT light extra charcoal,, the cooking temp will get REALLY WAY TOO HOT.
Actually, I think I could even use less charcoal than I now use,, I have only used the ring about 15 times.
I consider this ring a real success.
OH, by the way, my ring is stainless steel sheet, that is what I had in the shop,,,
I think the ring could be 3 inches, or 4 inches, or 5 inches wide, and still work the same way,,
so the width is not critical, if you make one, use what you have,,,
When my daughter and her family comes over, and I gotta cook more food,
I simply lift the ring out, and use more area of the grill,, no permanent change was made to the grill.
We need more COVID caused projects!!
Since my daughter is kinda trapped at home with her 4 children (the oldest is age 10) , they decided a cottage might be nice as a place to go for the day.
A small (~800 sq ft ? ) cottage, with 26 acres came up for sale,, my daughter bought it!! They now have PLENTY of space for the kids to run,,,
No furniture was left behind, so they are trying to add some furnishings as inexpensive as possible.
I decided to whip up a picnic table, and a bench,, these can be used outside, or on the screened in porch,,
The picnic table is welded, but, it needs further cleanup before paint.
I painted the bench this weekend,, the oil based paint will need a week or so to harden,, I did add hardener to the paint,,
hardener REALLY makes the low cost oil base paint level nicely, and the hardener seems to make the paint shine.
This paint was applied with an old 2 inch brush that I found in the shed,, as opposed to spraying.
The bench will have two pieces of composite decking board as the seat, the boards are 5 feet long, 5 1/2" wide.
The boards are tan.
This is it,, so far,, it is a new design I whipped up.

Everyone seems to like the design,, or maybe they are just being nice?`~
The round parts are solid steel bar, 1 inch,, and 1 1/2 inch ,, that gives the bench a nice weight to it,, and it will be much less likely to turn over.
I had some paint left over that had hardener in it, so I applied the extra paint to the sawhorses,,,
Nice job. Looks like a fun project! With an underslung plow build underway and waiting on hydraulic parts, I decided to build a carryall for a little bit of counter weight and to carry my snowblower for a few sidewalk jobs in the neighborhood. Just used some steel ninjas laying around and most of the lumber came from a Home Depot scrap bin for pennies on the dollar.

What type of paint did you use for your project? I have aREALLY old gallon of Kubota orange Magic Paint. Bought it to cover some implements long ago and never ended up using it. Also used the hardener. I致e only dealt with automotive paints and I hear this Magic stuff never dries and fades bad. This is a carryall and I知 not utterly concerned but I have to say, brush application went well until I applied a second coat too early. Again, carry all... I don稚 care but it still came out nice.
