I've raised horses, cows, sheep, goats. Big critters require big equipment. With your size spread, stick with something you can pick up, hog tie and stuff in the trunk of your car to cart it around. And something that will like you. Sheep and goats are this way. Nothing cuter than a baby goat. They will jump on everything, including you and your vehicles. Sheep keep the grass mowed better than goats. I recommend several sheep... and if they don't fit your program, you can sell them or butcher & eat them yourself.

I am reading this with great interest, because we will have to maintain a firebreak around our new house next year.

Rough terrain, hard to mow. Some grass, not much, weeds (more than grass), and small bushes.

We are thinking of one or two goats, and from this discussion, something else for the grass. Does anyone have experience with llamas?

They are smaller than horses, a big advantage, and apparently drive off coyotes.

Buy a small tractor and all the stuff that goes with it /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif, build your fence, buy a cow, when it gets to 600 lbs. have it butchered, keep half for yourself, sell the other half.
Mow, enjoy yourself and try not to make a pet out of the cow, since it is never pleasant sitting at the table saying 'ol Junior made a good burger!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
