The first cowboys were actually Indians... We have cowboys, Indians, cattlemen and a happy mixture of all, including Texicans, oilmen and astronauts here in Oklahoma!

I thought the Indians were buffaloboys or bisonboys.

According to the story I heard, the early Spanish conscripted the natives to tend the cattle.

Los Kineños the Cowboys of the King Ranch

Los Kinenos - King Ranch

An excerpt: "Already expert stockmen and horsemen, these resilient denizens of the rugged Mexican range became known as Los Kineños – King’s people. They and many generations of their heirs would go on to weave a large portion of the historical tapestry of King Ranch. The expert Kineño cowboys now occupy a justifiably legendary place in the annals of the taming of the vast American West. The mystique of the Kineños is alive and well, and descendants of the original Cruillas residents still live and work on the ranch today – providing a vital link with the past and giving the ranch a key aspect of its unique atmosphere."

I had a friend who was quite the Cowgirl who lived close by. DSC01803.JPG

I liked and missed that kind of outdoorsy, get your hands dirty, woman. She moved to Costa Rico or something like that.

Then theres Tony Montana and the "caine cowboys" !

Here's a link to the original Marlboro man .

My place is surrounded by BLM (public) land. Standing out by my garage a few days ago when I saw the cowboys were moving the cows to summer range up in the mountains:

No. That was southern Nevada not far from Vegas and about 500 miles from me in Northern Nevada. The valley I live in is at an elevation of 4400 feet; the cattle are headed into the mountains where they'll be grazing up to 9000+ feet in elevation. The Vegas area is ~ 1200 feet in elevation and hotter than **** this time of year!

I knew 3 guys in my home town in Co. who did ads for Marlboro and they were all real ranchers. None of them smoked but 2, who were brothers, dipped Copenhagen. I was pretty good friends with the 3rd guy who didn't smoke and he is the only one still alive. Marlboro used to send them all cases of cigarettes on a regular basis. They all gave them away. There were a lot more smokers back then who were glad to get them.

There was another young guy there who did ads for Viceroy cigarettes and he wasn't a cowboy in the real world but as a kid one of his country buddies got him into team roping and he got to be pretty good at it. He dressed like a cowboy but his family owned a small chain of grocery stores and that's where he made his living. It's a good thing they were pretty successful since keeping a good rope horse was pretty expensive, even back then.
