In the english world, breakaway stirrups have become more popular. I suspect the thinner english stirrup design is easier to get hung up, even with proper footwear.
I knew a woman in her twenties that was a professional 3-day eventer. She came off, got her foot stuck, and was dragged to her death.
My wife had a very minor-looking fall, and she broke her hip clean through. Even before the x-rays, the emergency room guy said it must be broken, because her right leg was shorter than the left.
It is a fun, but dangerous, activity.
I'm reminded of a story my Dad told me. He grew up on the farm; worked horses on the farm, and rode horses, even to school. I made the remark, that it must have been fun, riding horses all the time and using them on the farm. He said "He** no, it wasn't fun. Horses are dangerous, and if you weren't careful, they would kill you. Tractors, he said, were the best thing that ever happened to farming".
