Dave,

Nice comments.

Coyotes are often treated as some mindless parasite that should be shot on sight. It's too bad and really short sighted.

I've spent a considerable amount of time with one. When you look into their eyes, play games with them, see them trust you and see their intellegent and fun loving behavior, it is touching.

I know they can be a problem, but they don't deserve the mindless hatred I so often see.

I've enjoyed your pics and story, thanks for posting it.

J35 was totally right. You won't eliminate coyotes no matter how many you shoot. The ones you shoot will be replaced. If the pack on your property isn't hurting your livestock, leave them alone, the next pack might. But even that isn't very likely. I have a dairy goat farm, and also raise sheep. I've NEVER lost a goat or sheep to a coyote. I also run free range chickens, and I've seen coyotes walk right by my chickens. Their main diet is RODENTS. They are beneficial. Have any of you who shoot them on sight ever actually lost any animals to coyotes. Probably pretty few. They do more good than harm. And as was also said earlier, they are beautiful animals. Check out Raspy's thread. You can learn a lot about coyotes reading about Sandy.

If they are not bothering you or your stock don't worry about it, probably just mousing in the field.

Kill your present crop off and the next ones that move in might really cause you problems.

Don't rock the boat :) ---- J

No problem if they want mice or moles. But we have a grandson here and one small dog and cat. Across the field from us a coyote chased a neighbor's dog on to the back deck and attacked it.

you have a really nice pic there...it is yours? ok. stepping on a lot of toes. lots of vendettas out there, & venom. to me the coyote is a beautiful animal. & free ..... and, of course, encroaching on all of your personal prop/belongs. ok shoot them, you decide what's important. ****, i'd shoot the wild hogs marauding my hay fields. but, well...i donno, think the coyote has a bad rap. a better survivor than you or me. can you see any beauty in the animal, or just another cockroach? please excuse the thorn in side....... shall we have all suburbia with manly control? coyote gun in one hand, Roundup in another? ....

As long as they keep away from the house I leave them alone.

Not to mislead anyone.

I have sold my share of coyotes at auctions like this one.

Nov. thru Feb I harvest every Coyote, fox or Bobcat I can, I give em a break the rest of the year if I can.

I believe thinning them down a little helps keep the species healthy .

Mange, Parvo , Plague, Rabies, starvation can be pretty cruel, but is natures way of dealing with over population.

Stay safe --J

We have lost several ducks and chickens to coyotes and a few cats too. Recently my wife was on a horseback ride and always takes our two dogs. They came upon 3 young pups on the trail 2 of which managed to avoid them the third wasn't so lucky. The dogs attacked it and broke its back. Not packing so had to put out of misery with a rock. Not good for anyone but can't leave it thee suffering. A little while later a bigger coyote was following them. Probably the mother. A few nights later we lost a duck. Wife convinced was revenge killing but I am not so sure. Someone more educated than me said they will send in a younger one to scope out a hunting area. Older wiser ones will stay back and wait for opportunity. I have only seen a couple in daylight. Capture many on my cameras. Its tough when you lose pets and birds but when you live amongst them you must accept it on some level. The hard part is discovering the pile of feathers 50 yards Down trail from my property..
