Coyotes killing livestock

Wow, Tim, I have never heard of that type of behavior either. We have plenty of coyotes in the area, but we raise Texas Longhorns and don't have a problem with them. Some of the angus/charlois people loose a calf every now and then, but nothing at all like you are reporting. I wish I were in your area, I'd love to help kill them!

I didn't know that it was illegal to poison them, but if I had a problem that bad, and witnessed a dozen in my field eating one of my animals, I'd pretty much do whatever it took to kill them. It is wrong of legislatures to tie your hands in dealing with this or any other threat to your stock. They should make a law that it's illegal for coyote's to kill your stock and punishment is death by any means possible.

In this county, if you observe a dog that is molesting your property (you or livestock) then you have the legal right to remove the threat to your property... means kill ém.

I know Montana and Idaho both have state laws saying you can kill dogs for harrasing your livestock (also poultry in Idaho, not sure in Montana). I am surprised that Texas does not have the same law being they are/were a big cattle state.

However, neighbors sometimes are not understanding. Thus, best NEVER mention to ANYONE that you have addressed a dog problem on your place.

Yep, best handled the same way loggers handle the tree-spiking environmentalists.... Shoot 'Em, Bury 'Em, Shutup.

charlz, I guess I'm confused... I thought I DID say that in my county inTexas you CAN kill critters molesting your property/livestock.

Tim... congrats on your long shot at night... excellent! Wow.. you have a truly extremely serious problem. Right approach to use dead stuff as bait.
I'e had coyotes eat coyotes dead in a trap.

I think I'd visit a local grocery store and see if I couldn't get a regular supply of bad meat that they are throwing out.. and put it out in the same place daily... let them eat it unmolested for several days until they consider it their private feed bin, then sit in wait one night.... repeat at irregular intervals, keeping feed there every night...

Maybe put an ad in Craig's List or visit a sporting goods store to find an eager and SUPERB marksman who wants some extra hunting time...

good luck... !!

Charlz,

In NC, its not legal to hunt at night, much less with a light. If caught with a light and gun you are poaching so says the law. You might want to check you local laws.

Its pretty pathetic that a land/stock owner is prevented from handling a problem like this as they see fit. I talked with an old chicken farm years ago. He said that every once in a while he and the other farmers would have to kill all of the dogs that where running loose in the county. This was before there was a dog catcher. The only control was the neighbors culling the population when the feral dogs started to impact live stock and poultry. In NC it is legal to kill an animal in the act of attacking stock. Or at least it was last time I checked.

Later,
Dan

Coyotes will eat anything a big bag of the cheapest dog food you can buy will work as well as meat specially if you throw a little meat onthe first time. We have lots of them here but they seldom bother livestock or other domestic animals. There is so much natural food, rabits, rats, birds they just don't seem to go after domestic animals. My neighbor owns 7000+ ac and raises beef he says that he has never lost a healty animal to them only a few that were sick or dying anyway.

Dan, are there not exceptions to that general rule? Don't you have coon hunters who hunt at night? Texas law specifically says " Fur-bearing animals may be hunted at night on private property with the aid of an artificial light."

Where I live, state law allows some hunting at night, but county law makes it illegal to discharge a firearm between sundown and sunup. It always pays to check local regulations.

Yep, we've got so many laws now that it can get plumb confusing.

I would consider it "protecting your livestock" instead of "hunting" at night. You hear a disturbance, investigate with flash light and gun and shoot the culprits. Different than hunting, especially if on your own property and in defense of your livestock. At least that would be my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yes it's legal to hunt coyotes at night in Texas with a light, calls and all that good stuff.

Get ya a good squeeling rabbit call and a bouncing rabbit decoy, they can't resist the bouncing rabbit once they see it and will keep their eyes on it so you can get off a shot or two.
This will work in the day time.

The coyotes are finding a way through your electric fence or it is not putting out enough amperage. It needs to be rated for livestock and not one of them week electric dog fences. It needs to be able to light them up.
